Teachers: mail home a welcome letter before school starts?
I've been teaching for 6 years and would just send home a letter on the first day. However, I've toyed with the idea of sending home a letter in the mail. Haven't done this before, but wondering with a smaller class this year if its a good idea?? Just a one page on nice paper explaining how many years I've been at the school, what room, some of the things in the curriculum, and a pic of me.
I teach 1st grade, so sometimes they would go to the other 1st grade room since they wouldn't recognize me, so I guess that would alleviate some confusion (if they can remember what I look like lol).
Does anyone send the letters out in the mail before school? Or is it a 'waste' of stamps/time/$? lol

Re: Teachers: mail home a welcome letter before school starts?
I've done this before, but it was always at the school's expense and it went home about 3 weeks or a month before school began. It got my 6th graders excited and I gave them a summer scavenger hunt to work on. I am sure parents and kids would appreciate it but I don't think it is necessary.
Sorry, I don't think this helps too much!
I think this is a great idea. I'm working on finding a teaching job, but once I get one I know I'll do something like this. It's great for establishing a relationship with the parents prior to having to call them about something their kid did that day that got them in trouble!
I've never done it as a teacher, but I teach high school!
My mother taught 1st grade for 30 years. She used to send a postcard to each student when she got her class list over the summer. Just a quick hello, what to expect, that sort of thing.

As a parent, I love it when teachers do this sort of thing. It's great to get to know a little bit about the teacher and to tell my child their teacher's name, etc.
I assume teachers in our district don't do it because we don't know who their teachers are until the Thursday before school starts the following Monday.
Does your school not send anything out? I teach HS but I know the elementary schools send out welcome letters to each student with their teacher's information, class information, and a little picture of their teacher.
I think it's a cute idea but I don't think you should be responsible for the cost of it. Do you have a budget where you can expense this? Or get some pre-stamped envelopes from your main office?
Our school has us do an intro. letter and they send it to the kids when they let them know their teachers (about 3 weeks before school starts). This year it was an internet link.
We also send a postcard with our pics and a short message like,"Hi Student,I'm looking forward to having you in my class! Enjoy the rest of the summer".
It might be good....they still email me over every little thing though.
Maybe because I'm so nice and accessible.
I wouldn't do on my dime though.
I sent home a postcard when I taught K but for the past 6 years, we haven't received our class lists until about 5 hours before the parents/students do the Thursday before school starts the following Monday. We get them earlier than some schools in my district do, too. A friend of mine had 20 minutes to get everything labeled (with 27 names!) before parents and students came to meet her!
It would be nice but it's not possible for me so I don't worry about it.
