50 Best Documentaries To See Before You Die

is a very cool special. It's on this network "Current" which I a) didn't know existed and b) didn't know we had as part of our cable package.

Morgan Spurlock hosts and there's 5 parts; each part has 10 docs showcased.

I'm not a big movie person, but from the first 2 parts I've seen I really want to see Inside Job and March of the Penguins (I kind of can't believe I haven't seen these films).

  • I. Love. Current.

I hadn't ever heard of it either until I was flipping through the channels one day and found a documentary on a comparison between typical schools that a high school aged student would attend around the world.  It was great.  Now it's one of my regular "what's on?" channels.

  • What do you mean by showcase?

Are they just providing summaries?  Or are they talking with the filmmakers and revisiting the subjects they studied?  I'd be particularly interested if they did follow-ups on the people covered in the documentaries...

Otherwise, all I need is the list and my Netflix account.

  • Is there a list somewhere? And I see Penelope Spheeris is on the panel  - which leads me to ask - when are you going to release Decline of Western Civilization on DVD Ms Spheeris? I've only been waiting...decades. grr...sorry, I digress.

I also love Current. I highly recommend their Vanguard series.

I know!  I saw this in college and I absolutely loved it.  I was hoping maybe she would release on Criterion or something, but no.  :(

Give a synopsis, show some scenes, interview directors/producers/movie critics/actors about (insert movie here). As far as I can tell they are not doing follow-ups, but that certainly would have been a cool feature. In the first epi (50-41), Spurlock interviewed Billy Mitchell of Donkey Kong fame (one of the docs featured) at his arcade at the Orlando airport. That was very strange, as BM is a strange dude.

For somebody who's not a movie person AT ALL (I've seen 3 movies in 3 years) but who oddly enough likes documentaries, this was a great way to figure out if there were any that I'd go out of my way to see (and I've found that there are!).

But how would you know if you'd be interested in them, by title alone?
