Insurance related question

We have BCBS of Alabama (weird I know, since we live in CA). Anyways I went to have some genetic testing done in June and didn't end up having it done because there was no reason to according to the test results my mom received when she was tested a few years ago. So I spent less than 20 minutes in this geneticists office and was not told anything about the billing, ect. Today in the mail I receive a bill from the hospital, have yet to receive an EOB from the insurance. The billed amount according the hospital bill is $444, my portion is $225.71. I am really felling like maybe they billed incorrectly. Would you call the insurance company first or the hospital billing department?

Oh and the hospital bill does not say if it was billed for an office visit or actually testing. It actually doesn't say anything but the date and what the insurance paid and the balance due.

Re: Insurance related question

  • I would call your insurance company and ask them. They'll be able to tell you exactly what the hospital billed, what they are going to actually cover and what percentage of that you owe.

I recently had BCBS of Texas and no problems calling them and discussing things regarding my coverage. Also, you should be able to log-in online at BCBS of Alabama and look at what was submitted. You'll be able to see the same thing the insurance company received from the hospital for billing. Also, you can see how much you've paid towards your Out of Pocket and Deductible, if you have either of those with your insurance.

Once you sort things out with your insurance you'll know exactly what you need to tell the hospital if you need them to re-bill your insurance.

  • I agree start with the insurance company.  They can break down what part was paid and why other things were not covered.  The experience I have had is that the insurance company was way more helpful than the hospital was.

Good luck.  I hate dealing with either!
