I'm so upset about failing my 1 hour glucose test guys. I've been feeling so mad at myself for not eating better (even though I feel like I eat well most of the time). Everything else about my pregnancy has been so amazing and so perfect, but when the nurse told me "you failed, you need to take the 3 hour" she sent me to the appointment making nurse who set me up and sent me on my way. No one told me any more information. I'm not sure if I should be eating a certain way, or if there is anything I can do to ensure that I pass the 3 hour in 3 weeks... I feel so guilty about anything I eat and I'm so depressed about the fact that all I want to do is eat sweets... and I know I shouldn't.
I'm just really bummed and feel really guilty... so for listening, you get one of these... because I guess I shouldn't be eating them anyway.

Re: Ugh, I failed my 1 hour...
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
Well that's reassuring.
I do tend to over-worry. I guess I should just relax then if there is nothing I can do about it. I just wish the nurses had been a little more informative so I didn't jump to conclusions, but they were a lot more busy than usual yesterday. Thanks for the info M.
There's nothing wrong with over-worrying, trust me (I'm good at that). That just makes you a good mama.
Good luck on the three hour test.

I read somewhere that some 60-70% of people fail the 1 hour, so don't worry!
Good luck on the 3-hour. I have to take my 1-hour next Friday, not really looking forward to that.
Thanks so much ladies, I'll keep you updated. My appointment is Sept. 7th, so we'll see then!
I really feel like the drink was not as bad as everyone said it was. First of all, it was the size of one of those half bottles of water, just the real little guys, and it tasted like Hi-C. I had to get an ultrasound to check on my placenta (it was looking low and they were worried, but it has since moved up to a safe distance from my cervix) so that killed some time. The only thing I would have done different, was they were so busy I wasn't seen for an hour after my appointment time and once they realized I had to do the glucose test she was like 'oh honey, you should have told us, you could have had it done by now!'. So maybe keep that in mind if it looks busy the day you go in.

As pp have already told you, it's not a huge deal to fail the 1-hour. Also, there really isn't anything else you can do to "prepare". It's just how your body decided to process sugar now that you have all the extra hormones from being pg. Your body goes through amazing stress during pregnancy... some of it takes it toll on your body.
Some advice that I can pass onto you from my doctor's office, don't go on an empty stomach/eat no later than hour before the test (unless your DR has advised you otherwise) and don't have a sweet breakfast or lots of white carbs. I realize this is a little late to tell you but just in case it helps someone else.
I don't know anything about the 3 hour test except that you may have to fast beforehand. But I'm sure your office would tell you how to prepare.
And you're right about the glucose it's not nearly as bad as the bumpies make it out to be....
My Acme Box last update 3/28/11
As a person who had Gestational Diabetes and now Type 2 diabetes, I have been through it all. I do know that my diet was strict with little or no carbs and I still failed. I tried to manipulate the test I took after I gave birth and still failed. I am stuck with Type 2 which is a very low number of the population after birth. (no including general population) - Some advice from my gestational diet which should help-
15 grams of carbs in the am is what you should aim for- hard I know. Try to do a lot of protein (eggs, bacon, sausage, peanut butter- stick to the lower sugar variety) or veggies. Lunch 30 grams of carbs and dinner 60 grams of carbs. If you google gestational diet they can give you examples. Snacks should be 15-25 grams of carbs depending on how your day has gone. This might help before your 3 hour. Dont fret... many people pass the 3 hour. I just wasnt so lucky!
As everyone else said, GD has nothing to do with your diet. If you have it, you have it.
I failed my 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. I found the 1st hour of the 3 hour test was the worst followed by the huge sugar crash when I walked out (it was also 90+ that day so the heat didn't help)
Make sure you ask them how long you should fast before taking it. I was not able to eat anything after 7pm the night before and could only drink water after that & during the test itself. If they ok you to drink water before the test, I would highly advise you to do so. If you go in even slightly dehydrated, they may have a tough time finding your veins. Also, make sure they alternate arms each time they do a draw. There's no sense in having all 4 draws ( before, 1 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour) all taken out of the same arm if you can just have each arm tortured only twice.
Like Ames said, you will get bored. I actually brought my netbook, a book and some magazines. I found playing games on the netbook made the time go by quickly. Also, dress comfortably. You will be sitting in the waiting room for a long time. I made sure I wore sneakers so that I could just take off my shoes to get comfy ( wouldn't want to take off flip-flops and be barefoot.) Just choose a nice cozy corner of the waiting room and set up shop. Pull another chair over, if you need to keep your feet elevated.
