Hello and Intro

Hello, I am moving to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in a month, so thought I would start checking out this board and introduce myself. My husband and I are both from FL, but have been in Pittsburgh for 6 years now. We have a 16 month old daughter, and a 6 year old dog.

I posted a few weeks ago asking for recommendations on different areas, and we've decided to live in Manayunk. We are looking at a bunch of houses this weekend, and then start working on finding daycare. Is there a local website with info about daycares, doctors, things to do, etc., or is my best bet yelp?

I hate moving, but am excited to live in Philly- it seems like everyone I know who has lived there loves it!

  • Welcome! We just sold our home in south Philly and will be relocating to manayunk (hopefully if we ever agree on a sales price) in October.
  • Thanks!

One question I have right now is if there are any areas to avoid? It seems like a nice area and the pictures all look nice, so I'm not too worried, but it's hard deciding where to live without knowing much. I think several houses are near "the cliff", if that helps, and one house is over by a golf course.

  • Are you renting or buying shoot me an email with the addresses I have probably seen them if you are buying but will know the area if you are renting. Dmaf14@aol.com We personally like the lower part if manayunk nearer to fairmount park.
  • Sorry, I have no info for you, just a hi and welcome.  :)
  • Thanks! We are renting- it will probably be a while before our house in Pittsburgh sells.

I sent you a reply with my thoughts on the houses/area. Good luck!

  • Welcome! I went to school in PGH and LOVED it. Philly is definitely a faster pace than PGH, but you'll adjust. Just practice saying "soda" instead of "pop" and dont brag about the steeler's superbowls too much and you'll be good! :P

  • hello!  i'm useless as to the manayunk area, but just wanted to say welcome!
  • Hello!  I am also useless regarding Manayunk.  Any questions about South Philly or Center City I can certainly help you with.  Good luck with everything!

  • Manayunk, in general, is relatively safe compared to other parts of the city but it is still Philadelphia and crime does happen everywhere. It is also really small and even the locals argue about where is turns from Manayunk to lower Roxborough. It is heavily saturated with college students and, IMO, translates into higher rents since landlords know they can get $300-600 per room from students. If you have any specific questions about certain blocks, let me know. I'll do my best to answer any questions you have. You can email me newqueenphilly @ gmail
