What size for a canvas?

We have a 2 story tall fireplace in our living room. Above the mantel is a large white panel. I would like to get a canvas of one of our family pics to sit on the mantel but unsure about how big to order... any suggestions of way to tell how big I should go?

TIA!

Re: What size for a canvas?

  • How big is the white panel?  I would go a pretty sizely canvas since it's a 2 story wall, you really want it to stand out, but I would measure that white panel and see what corresponding size is available within those measurements.  Also, is the panel horizontal or vertical or just a big square?  That will also determine your canvas size.

Ditto, exactly. Preliminary thinking leads me to say a 32x40, though.  I KNOW it sounds huge, but it's really not and will look FANTASTIC.  I wish more people could break out of the 8x10 box.

Also, and sorry I'm speaking for her, you may want to see if Heidi can order it for you via a pro printer as mpix and the like don't have canvases that large.

FUN!  Can't wait to see and have a picture of my own that I can do that large!

  • I used a groupon for mine and I think it was 16x20. It sounds huge and looked big when I first got it but once I put it on the wall it was perfect size. I have it in our office so it isn't as big of a wall. I think you could do bigger if it is above a fireplace and on a taller wall.
  • Ya, I'd probably go with 40 or 42" wide -- I'm just thinking about the TV we have mounted above our mantle and it isn't as big of a space as what you're talking and it's a 42" up there.  While it takes up the majority of the space, I don't know that I'd want a picture much smaller if we put one up there...  Your space is definitely a stately part of the room and you want a picture to do the same and not be swallowed up!  However, if the white panel would conflict with that size, then I'd go with something that correlates to that size/shape so as not to compete and look "off".  Fun!!!

  • Here's a great blog post showing scale with a mantle. I'd probably say you're going to want to do at least a 40 or 42" width. Since it's two stories, you could also go right above it with two 20" wide prints of the kids or other shots you like form the session.
