good deal for dslr?

Do you think this is a good deal for this camera? http://www.abesofmaine.com/item=CNEOSRDT32LK~item.htm  Thanks!

Re: good deal for dslr?

  • I have actually been trying to find a good deal on a dslr as well.  Considering it comes with 2 lenses, it appears like a good deal to me from everything else I am finding.

Then again, this is my first time shopping for a dslr as well.

  • I don't know much about the Rebels.

I can say that working with Abe's of Maine is awesome. I really like them and I like supporting a small(ish) business.

In my opinion I wouldn't buy the lens. I would buy the body only and then buy a better lens. As a rule of thumb, cameras come with kind of junky lenses. BUT, that is just me.

  • Thanks Shuga-- they didn't have the t3 body to compare prices, it seems to sell mostly in kits. If I were to buy a camera body, which would be a good priced, decent quality lens to start off with (I'm vascillating btw canon & nikon bodies anyway)?
  • For someone starting out I would suggest the "nifty fifty". 50mm 1.8. It was my first lens and I adored that thing. It is a prime lens so there is no zoom on it...not sure if that makes a difference to you. I can tell you that it worked awesome taking pictures of my niece and the animals. I had it for a short period of time with Abe then the camera was dropped and the lens broke. I upped toa  50mm 1.4 and am in love with that.

As for a zoom...ummm....I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and I am really enjoying that. I also have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 which is an OK lens.

Ditto everything that she has said already. I think the Rebel lineup as a whole is pretty solid for consumers. The "kit" (the one that comes with it) is ok to start, but you might find yourself thinking that you need a better camera when all you need is better "glass" (lenses). I highly discourage anyone from buying multilens kits because the second lens is almost always absolute junk that will struggle taking pictures in lower light and won't focus fast enough for anything that is moving. You'd be better off saving up for a better long lens. I find all of the "package deals" can be a bit of a rip off based on the quality of what you get. I tell my students that the 50mm 1.8 should be their first lens after the kit lens. It's not rock solid, but it's also $100. It will let you take photos in much lower light than your kit lens. And the fixed length will force you to get used to moving as opposed to depending on your zoom (it's a good skill to have and will help your compositional technique). After the 50mm, I will also agree with the 17-50. I absolutely loved that lens. It was the first one I ever bought for my business and it was a rock star for countless "gigs" for me. I sold mine to Shugga when I upgraded to a much more expensive (4+ times the price) lens.

Good luck! If you need more help at all, feel free to find me on Facebook and I'll help you out in any way I can.

Ok, here is a better deal for you (from the person who scored 50+% off at Staples yesterday)...

    • Sign up with ebates.com (if you aren't already)
    • Find Adorama.com on the ebates site and click on the "Shop Now" button, which will give you 2% cash back
    • Search Adorama.com for "Canon EOS Rebel T3"
    • Scroll down until you find the one for $549.99 (after a $50 instant rebate)
    • It has free shipping already and, after the 2% cash back you'll get from ebates, it brings the price to $538.99. Once you reach the "maximum life" of the stock lens, you can use the $160 you will save towards buying a better lens. By then you'll better know what you will be using the camera for and we can better help you chose a solid lens that suits what you would use it for (long zoom, macro, kiddo/family pictures, etc.).
    Hope that helps!
