This fabric just does not want to be a dress!

This is just a venting post...

I decided I was going to try and sew my first garment using a pattern and I am ready to throw everything at the wall now! I swear, I will have two identical pieces and they still won't line up correctly, I don't understand the pattern (maybe I shouldn't have jumped right into vogue patterns), and sewing with acrylics is not easy!

Even though I picked the right size and measurements, looking at the pieces, I have no idea how on earth it is going to fit.  My machine is jamming every chance it gets, I have already re-threaded it at least 8 times...and I've only been up an hour.

I'm just having a no good sewing day!

Re: This fabric just does not want to be a dress!

  • I'm a novice when it comes to garments, but is it possible that they aren't supposed to "line up"? Sometimes when I get confused, I pin everything together and then approximate putting it on so that I can better visualize the pieces as I'm sewing.

  • I hear ya. the pattern I'm using right now is supposedly an easy pattern. The pieces definitely look huge for what I'm making, but I know once finish, it'll be much smaller.

    Hang in there!

  • It's been a long time since I've sewn a dress, and I always had my grandmother's help if I got in a pickle.  But, I wanted to give an unconventional suggestion.  Go a head and throw it at the wall, shut the machine off, walk away for a half and hour and come back to it?

Sometimes, if I leave a project for a little bit and come back to it, it seems to help me.

I hope the day gets/got better for you!

This works. Sometimes so does swearing.

  • and if it makes you feel better, vogue patterns are tricky and acrylic can be as well.

come back to it in a day or two

  • Vogue patterns can be a bit advanced for a beginner. Punish your project for a day or so and come back to it later. :)

I gave up on it and decided to just relax before heading off to work.  I think I'll leave it alone tonight and tackle it again tomorrow.

I did bring the part I had to seam rip apart with me to do on my break today so at least I don't have that waiting for me at home anymore.
