How many houses did you look at before you found the right one?

Or how many have you looked at so far but still haven't found the right one yet? I think maybe our realtor hates when we call because she has showed us so many houses. Big Smile But in our defense we made one offer that fell through and another on a SS that we are still waiting to hear from. So its not like we don't like anything. I think she has shown us about eight or nine houses! Including the two we've made offers on. Is that normal? Lol! She is super nice and doesn't seem to mind but I got to counting them up today and now I feel kinda bad.

Re: How many houses did you look at before you found the right one?

  • We looked at 8.  There was one that he loved (I hated), two that I thought were "ok" (he hated).  As soon as we both saw the 8th house, we knew it was the one.

We looked at hundreds and hundreds of online listings.

    Visited 10ish open houses.

Toured 3 or 4 with our REA (wanted to visit more but a good half dozen went under contract before we could get in).

H followed signs to a model home on his day off one day, toured it, was impressed. That community was out of our price range but he found two neighborhoods by the same builder we could afford. We visited the model in those neighborhoods, fell in love and signed a contract.

I don't think there is a "normal." It all depends on what's available in your area and price range and how picky or flexible you are with your requirements.

  • Online, I look at hundreds.  In person, we looked at about 12 or 13.  And those were all after we looked at our house.  We found ours too soon and wanted to see what else was out there before we made an offer.  Nothing else compared...

  • Online, I spent hours looking at houses.  We looked at 3 before we put an offer on one, but had to pull out due to leaks / mold issues.  We looked at 3 more, and found our house!

  • I probably looked at at least 40 or more total.  But I went to a lot of open houses.  DH and I together, w/ our agent, probably looked at about 20 or 25.

    Online- looked at even more!

  • Maybe 20 - I can't say we found the "right one" but it's good enough for right now.  We were really running out of time because we had to move and just didn't want to rent anymore.  I'm happy with the house I just wish we had storage.
  • 8 or 9 in person. Lots more online. We're only looking for a house for the next 4-6 years so we didn't have as many requirements as some.

  • We looked at roughly 13-15 with our agent once we sold our house. We went to a few open houses alone and looked at hundreds online. We first started the process of wanting an investment property so we probably looked at 10 of those in person, then we decided to sell and saw one with him while we were for sale, then once we sold we kicked up the in person searching.

  • We looked at 6 in person.  We would have looked at more except that a price drop put the place we ended up buying below our budget and our offer was accepted.  If that hadn't happened I don't know how many I would have had to look at before finding the one.

  • Online? Hundreds.

Our in person search? One new build, then this house.

  • We've been looking for 7 months and have looked at 8 or 9 houses and 3 lots with our real estate agent. (No offers made yet.) I don't think it's that excessive.  The only time I feel bad is when we ask to see houses that are 30-45 min away.  I hate to have her drive all that way although she keeps saying she doesn't mind and that it's her job which is true, but I still feel bad.

  • Loads online.

Then saw about 7ish re-sell homes over the course of two weekends.

Then we toured a model home, and another model home - and made an offer to build.

  • Online, we looked at hundreds.  In person, we probably looked at about 65-70, offered on two and 1. outbid and 2. seller decided to get divorced and took off market.  When we finally found the one we had an accepted offer in under 12 hours.  I should also mention we looked for about six months... It was EXHAUSTING!  But it'll be worth it!

  • We looked at about thirty - but we really only had two days to find a home, since we were looking over two hours away.

  • Ok! So we are just pretty normal then! Now I don't feel so bad! Maybe we will find "The One" pretty soon! This whole process is so exausting and I am SO ready for it to be over!
  • We looked at 27 houses in less than a month and a half. We also looked at 7 different houses to build. Our realtor really worked hard for her money.

  • We've looked at hundreds online and have gone to see 50+ in person.  Of those 50 we've seen, we went back to 3 of them twice.  Still looking for our perfect house!
  • Online - hundreds. I too am still looking for the perfect house.

  • We looked at 20 with our agent in one day, that's not an exaggeration either. We started around 9am and ended at 5pm even taking 30 minutes for lunch. But a majority of these homes were within 5-10 minutes of each other. We offered on 3 homes, the first two being bought with cash and our offer on the 3rd home on our list was accepted.

  • I lost count -- I'd guess 20-30 over a period of 6 months or so.  We put in 4 offers, 2 were accepted (after some negotiations), 1 fell through after inspection revealed that the house wasn't as good as it appeared to be.  We closed last week.

  • We looked at about 15-20 in person and more online, but not in the 100s. We were looking in two specific areas in our town in the fall of 2007 and there weren't a ton of options. But our lease was about to expire and we also wanted to grab a 0 down conventional loan, which were quickly disappearing then. I like our house a lot - it was the best of what we saw in our price range and preferred location. But it is not our forever house.
