Is it true that when selling your house, having a bathtub with a separate tub and tile is worth more that one of those all-in-one tub/shower inserts?
The previous owners did a terrible job tiling the tub, its uneven, the grout is cracked everywhere, and therefore it is impossible to keep clean. I would like nothing more than to take a sledgehammer to it, but someone mentioned this to me and I wasn't sure.

IMO yes.
Obviously a crappy tile job is probably less desirable than a fiberglass/plastic bath/shower insert, but overall the materials themselves are more expensive for a tile bath- an enameled cast iron or steel tub is going to cost more than an acrylic one, plus the cost of the tile and labor to install it, etc. is more $$ than the insert.

I just emailed DH about it and we put it on "the list". meaning the list of endless projects to get done around the house. YAY.
I think any amount of potential $ lost will be negated by no more feelings of hostility every time I walk in the bathroom.
our bathroom had a sliding door and I couldn't take it. My relief was palpable when DH removed the door and the frame.
Personally, I would rather have tile, even if it's ugly, than an all-in-one overlay. When we were looking at houses a few years ago that was a major show stopper. The gross factor of not knowing what the hell is under the overlay was something we were not willing to compromise with.
I'm not 100% positive about this, but I'm sure places like Bath Fitter install the overlay on top of your current shower tiles. Moisture will accumulate between the overlay and tile, which will lead to mold problems. I'm sure some DIYer's tear their tile down first, put up new drywall, and proceed with the overlay, thus eliminating my mold concern. It still freaks me out though.
Just my $0.02 from a different perspective. I honestly don't think tile vs overlay makes a huge difference with a listing price.
haha we also have "the list" which sits on the fridge and is very looooong. But I think we are in the same boat, really really want to get out of the TH, but it's not looking good.
We wouldn't be doing bath fitter or anything like that, we DIY almost everything. So we would be ripping the old stuff out. I agree, the thought of taking a shower in a newer enclosure overtop a cruddy old tub weirds me out.
Oh I wasn't implying that you would do that at all. I was thinking more on the lines of potential buyers wondering if the overlay was over old tile and not asking. That's what we did.
Actually, we asked the selling realtor at one house and he didn't know the answer so we stopped asking at other houses.
