any advice for...wait for it...fleas

Yup, we got 'em.  Ick! Last night, it looked like our beast cat was missing a bunch of hair near his tail and had a lot more dandruff than usual, so my husband combed him and there they were.  Ick! again.  After some googling, I was convinced it was mites but we went to the vet this morning and they confirmed it's definitely fleas.  He got a dose of antibiotic and a steriod because he looks a bit allergic.  No sign of them on 7lb doggy or other cat. Since both cats are indoor cats, obviously the dog was the carrier.  The dogs hair is super short so by combing through I am seeing nothing, but all of the animals just got a dose of flea meds and I'm hoping for the best. Ug, my dog is such a freak and won't even get near other dogs so the only way she could have gotten it was from walking around South Philly.  VOMMM

Now what I'm super worried about is the house and I don't know what to do.  The vet didn't seem too concerned, she just said to thoroughly clean the areas specifically where the cat hangs out and if it's carpet, to vacuum really well.  DH is so disgusted he wants to flea bomb the house.  Cat mostly hangs out on carpeted steps and our guest bed, so I'm going to be stripping that bed and washing in extremely hot water. Obviously steps and house is getting vacuumed.

Anyone go through this before and have any advice?

Signed,

Grossed out

Re: any advice for...wait for it...fleas

  • Lizzie had fleas when I got her.  I had to bomb the apartment, give her the flea killing meds and bathe her.

Honestly, bombing the place was the only thing that worked.  I actually forgot to throw out the chair pads I had, and the fleas came back.  So I did it twice before it worked.

    Sorry, fleas stink :(

    I was Beagle211
  • They come through window screens too. . I got them from an apartment I sprayed down and vacuumed carpets and flea meds.
  • You can use this to figure out if you have them in the house

If you do the in reality the only solution is to bomb.  Terminex comes until they are dead.

    Fleas are horrible

  • Bomb the shiit out of your place. I got them in an old apt in FL through the screened porch.

  • Julia dog got them at Valley Forge park.  We fought them, and won, and without bombing.  You probably know that I'll try anything non-toxic first.  Follow this:

    1. Vacuum everything, your carpets, your uphoulstery, your mattress
    2. Strip your bed (including the dust ruffle, if you have one) and wash everything in hot, hot water
    3. Dry sheets at a very high temp
    4. Wash any pet-related clothing/bedding in hot water.
    5. I began vacuuming daily for a week
    6. Empty the vacuum after every time, but do it outside--you don't want the fleas to repopulate
    7. We also bathed Julia twice in one week
    8. Now, if she comes with us to VF Park, it is when it is bath day.
  • Thanks all.  This is great advice.  I think I may be trying all of the vacuuming and cleaning I can do possible, plus that trap thing before I try to bomb.  I just read you need to leave your house for 8 hours and we have nowhere to go with all the animals for that amount of time :/  I guess I could take them to work if it comes down to it.  Ugh this is so frustrating.  And gross.
  • we've been battling with fleas for a little while now. we have no pets and no carpeting. we're thinking we got them from the neighborhood cats that hang out around our property. ugh.

we've found the only thing that works for us is a spray called Precor. after we cleaned, vacuumed, and bombed with zero success, we contacted an exterminator. they refused to come to our house, because we have hardwood floors, so they told us about Precor spray. it's the same chemical they would have used, but it's less concentrated for home/unprofessional use.

be careful with some of the bombs you can buy in the store - you have to turn off pilot lights. and don't forget to take the batteries out of your smoke detector if you use one!

good luck! i know it's frustrating! and you can't help but just feel dirty that you have them, even though that has nothing to do with it! if you find something that works, let us know!

  • If it comes to an exterminator I highly recommend ours, Daly Pest Control.  Jim really knows his stuff and is super nice and helpful.  And he has the best moustache ever, lol.  We've been using him now for 4 years.

  • No advice-just wanted to say that sucks :(

  • An update - as of right now, everything is ok.  I know it's kind of like roaches, you see one which could mean you will be infested but we only saw 3 total which were on the cat. We've washed literally everything and vacuumed all upholstery and carpet.  I'm really hoping for the best because bombing would be really difficult with 3 animals and 4 floors to the house.  Thanks all for your help and recommendations.  We are going to keep cleaning and cross our fingers.
  • I know I'm late to the party, but both of our cats had fleas a couple of years ago. I ended up buying an inexpensive-ish steam cleaner and steaming anything that couldn't be washed, like our mattress and pillows. I freaked the f out about it.
