Camera Q: Canon or Nikon?

I'm planning on upgrading on my 6 year old not-quite-dslr sony camera before year's end and am curious what everyone has (and lenses!). I know a lot of people are fans of the Canon Rebel; why did you choose it? I rented a Nikon D7000 on Kauai and LOVED it - but I also don't think I know enough about cameras...

Thoughts?

Re: Camera Q: Canon or Nikon?

  • Err... I have the Rebel because my brother gifted it to me. I'm no help, sorry!

Maybe try dpreview.com? I always use that site when shopping for a camera.

  • I have a Nikon D40 and a Canon G12. I have a lot of lenses for my D40, but bought my G12 when I went to Spain a few months ago for easy of not hauling a backpack full of stuff.

I have to say that Canon won me over. This particular camera was easy to use and takes great photographs. It was a bit easier for me to navigate the settings on the canon then it is for me to do it on the Nikon. My G12  is like a Small DSLR.  I'm not a camera aficionado but it seems people usually fall in to Nikon or Canon camps.

  • I own a Canon Rebel. the biggest reason why I chose the Canon over the Nikon was because my P&S was a Canon and so I was more familiar with the functions. I also went to Best Buy and held them both and was just more comfortable with the Canon. another reason I chose it over Nikon is because you can buy lenses of different brands, as opposed to only being able to purchase Nikon lenses... there are several brands that make lenses to fit the Canon models, but Nikon doesn't have the same feature.

as far as function and ability go, they're the same. it's really all about personal preference.

This. My Mom got us the Rebel and it was probably a rec from my brother who also has a Canon so I didnt really pick mine, but I love it. I wasnt aware that you could get lenses in other brands until this past Christmas when my brother gave us an awesome AF75-300mm lens that was not Canon brand but works amazingly.

    Good luck!

  • There are other makers who do lenses for nikon - the photog who we did the tour with on Kauai used them. He was saying they're a ? of the price of the Nikon ones. I've checked out prices of those online and they *seem* pretty comparable...

People just seem to love the camera they have! It's hard to decide when you haven't had either brand before. Stick out tongue

Yah it's really a personal preference. I love my Nikon D60. I love my Canon p&s. Choose whichever feels best for you and stock up on books/online resources on how to use all the features!

  • I think the fact that everyone loves what they have is just proof that you can't go wrong either way.  It really comes down to what you're more comfortable with.

As for me, I'm a Canon lady for pretty much the exact same reasons as Mandee.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • I have a Nikon D5000 and love it. Just like everyone else said about there's it really is personal preference. They are comparable and both make great quality of camera.
I talked to a photographer for quite sometime and tried both Canon and Nikon for quite a while before deciding on the Nikon. I love my swivel screen and that I can take pictures really low to the ground without laying on my belly to get it. I also just love the feel. I know this may sound weird but after shooting with film for years with my SLR I wanted something that had a bit of weight to it and the Canon just felt to light. I've also heard that the Nikon bodies tend to last longer than Canon but I really don't know if that is true as I have no way to compare.

  • I have the Nikon D300s and quite a few lenses and love them all.  Like others have said, it's about preference and what feels good to you.  You already know you like the Nikons, but try a few Canons and see if one feels better to you.  The D7000 is a really great camera and if you liked using it then I would definitely put it at the top of the list.  Good luck camera shopping.  Photography is definitely a fun (and expensive) hobby!  Keep us updated with what you get!
