Hi ladies! I haven't lurked here in a while, but I know this question has been posted several times before with little response. If someone has posted this already, I apologize!
I have long, thick, curly hair, and gel was my last non-natural hold out. Anyone with curly/frizzy hair understands this. I've searched and searched and I finally found the simplest, most amazing recipe for natural hair gel in Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post Consumer World, by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen. (This is a great book! I definately recommend it!!) ![]()
Basically all you do is boil 1 tbsp of whole flaxseed in 1 cup of water until the liquid is reduced by half. Strain it while it's still super hot. Let cool. Store in the fridge. Easy cheesy!!!
It holds my hair without being stiff or sticky. It keeps my curls defined. It doesn't have that fake, chemically smell. My hair is SO soft! I LOVE it! This is exactly what I've always wanted from a hair gel, but haven't been able to find until now. I really hope this helps someone!! ![]()
Re: Natural hair gel- FOUND!!!!
Now I need to find time to get somewhere I can get flaxseed. I'm using baking soda and ACV and I've given up my beloved mousse, but could really go for a styling product some days. Can't wait to try this!
Thanks for posting. Is it strange that it's cold when you put it on?
I know, right? My mom said, "Hmm- I guess I could have told you that since I boiled flaxseed accidentally and it was gelish. I never thought to put it in your hair, though!"
I'll probably try chia seeds at some point. I'll let you know!!
PLEASE STOP SPAMMING THE BOARDS
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing! My FI was using chemical based hair gels and it was breaking out his skin. Since he's purchased some made by Burt's Bee's which helped the problem, but I hear they don't make the product anymore...
So this is definitely a great find! Thanks so much for sharing!
