Tie Dye???

Does anyone know how to tie dye - I want to make the boys pink tie dye shirts for the 3Day Breast Cancer walk that my mom and I are Crew members for. would love some advice.

How do you get the swirl like this one? Do you just pick a starting point, pinch it and twist the entire shirt around and put rows of color?

How do you set the color so it doesn't come out in the wash and on the kiddos?

    yup.

I'd get a couple of extra shirts to practice on, in case the first few don't come out as well.

if you're using a quality dye (rit is decent), you should be able to buy a fixing agent and/or it should have instructions on how to set the color.

I'll second this. go with rit.

  • I did a couple of shirts in high school.  One I did I only used one color, yellow.  It was a long sleeve white shirt with a maroon screen print of our mascot and it said [High School] Baseball.  Maroon and gold were my high school colors.

Same night, I did a plain white tee for my brother.  I used the rest of the colors from the kit, including the yellow since there was some left.  It came out awesome.  I don't think he ever wore it, but I inherited it and ware it all the time.

Using the kit was super easy in my opinion.  I just followed the instructions.  I hope it works out well for you!

  • Rit dye is very pale.  I would suggest looking into tulip dye if you are just doing a few shirts or ordering from dharma trading co and using soda ash for a vibrant color.

  • I've done tie-dying with my students. For that swirl design, we use a plastic ruler - stick one end of the ruler in the center of the tee and twist it. The twisting will result in your shirt getting rolled up into a circle (like a cinnamon bun...yum...lol). Make sure it is nice and tight and tie rubberbands around it to keep it in the circle bun shape. The longer you let the shirt sit in the dye, the darker the color will be. When you're done dying it, take the rubberbands off and let the shirt dry on a hanger for at least 24 hours. When dry, wash the shirt, by itself, in cold water. I dry mine in the dryer afterwards, but it may work better to let it hang dry?

    Good luck!!

  • What I do it use scrap fabric squares, like a bunch of muslin, or some white napkins that aren't so white any more, and practice on those until I get the design effect I'm looking for, then I move on to the real shirts. The good news is you end up with pretty napkins from your practice runs!
