Is there a best way to follow up?

I know we discuss following up a lot here, however I'd like to know if there is a preference between an email follow up vs a phone call. I applied via email but received the phone call with the woman who would be my manager and interviewed with her. I didn't get the sense that there was an HR department. I was told I should hear this week, so I would like to follow up tomorrow but I'm not sure which way to go.

Re: Is there a best way to follow up?

  • There could be many reasons why the manger you met with hasn't contacted you yet.  She may be still interviewing other candidates, her boss may be holding up the hiring process or she may be stuck on another project non-hiring related.  In this horrible job market it's important to face the unfortunate truth that the employer has all the power and can contact you or ignore you for as long as they want.

If I were you, it would probably be best to wait another week and see if they contact you.  If you hear nothing, call the company and ask to speak to the person you interviewed with directly.  I know first-hand how hard it is to be patient in this situation, but you have to give the employer time to get through their process, whatever that may be, and hopefully they'll respond saying they've hired you or not.

Hang in there and good luck!

  • One more thing.  If you contact the manager now, you may come off as desperate and too aggressive.  And the manager may conclude that if she hires you, you may be desperate and too aggressive in the workplace.  So contacting the manager too soon may backfire on you. Just a word of warning.
  • thanks. When I went in for the interview, i asked when I could expect to hear back. I was told they were doing interviews the week I went and the week after so I could expect to hear back this week which is why I thought I should try following up tomorrow.

  • If you were supposed to hear back this week, there is still one more day left in the week. Following up too soon may seem aggressive. If I were you I'd wait until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and then shoot over a casual email asking if there was anything else they needed from you, and if they had any idea when you could expect to hear from them on next steps. Keep it light and brief, so they know you are still interested, but you don't come across as pushy.

It may be personal preference, but I wouldn't call. If they are taking longer than expected, they may just be very busy. When I'm busy I hate getting phone calls because unlike email, I can't choose when and where to answer.

  • huh, until both of you mentioned it may come off as too aggressive I didn't realize it could be. thanks for the heads up. Next week it is! i just really, really want this job. And I'll go with an email. They are hiring because the company is expanding so i'm hoping if I don't hear back tomorrow that's the reason why.
