I found an excellent deal to Copenhagen from Montreal and we booked it yesterday. I am going the first week of October.
So of course, I am here for tips on what to do/see. And eat! I heard it's an amazing place.
Also, should I feel guilty about not seeing my friends "back home," for a wedding and going to Copenhagen instead? I live in Quebec City. It was about the same price. I feel terrible but there's no way I could afford both.
Re: Going to Copenhagen
Where is 'back home'?
I'm in CPH next weekend so I'll let you know what I find there. I have a list of things that were recommended to me on this board:
Eat: Madklubben, Ero Ora, Den Lilli Apotek, Riz Raz, Halifax, Lag Kaghuset, Paradis Gelato
Bars: Rubys, Jazz House
I'm staying at the Scandic Palace, which is close to the central station.
Don't feel bad, just maybe not mention it on facebook or something so you don't upset your friend. But to get away and having a good holiday with just your DH sounds pretty awesome to me. And we all know, going home and having quality time with your spouse is pretty damn hard when everyone wants to see you. It would just be an extremely busy time and you feel you were unable to fit so many people in to go back to Q. City feeling exhausted.
I have no tips, except don't feel guilty and have lovely, lovely time.
Don't feel bad about going on a holiday in lieu of going home. If you spend your entire time abroad traveling only back home, IMO you will have wasted a lot of opportunities to see new places and you will have essentially wasted your vacation days running around to make sure you see everyone while you're back. For me, going home is not a vacation. It's stressful.
Re: flying to another continent instead of just going home: We're going to South Africa and Namibia for Christmas and New Years. We could have gone home. Our families wanted us to--but we didn't. It's the only time of year where we can just take three weeks without H having to take three weeks worth of vacation days. I don't feel bad about it at all.
I'm embarrassed about how many of those places I've never eaten at.
The Halifax has the best burgers in CPH, though. Riz Raz has a vegetarian buffet that I've partaken in many, many times. I don't know about the rest, except that I've seen Lagkagehuset, and thought that it must be good (the name means Layer Cake House).
My parents are coming to visit in October as well, and we've been searching for accommodations at airbnb.com - I've also heard some friends raving about www.wakeupcopenhagen.dk but have no personal experience.
Stuff to do? canal tours, castles, Danish architecture, parks, Viking stuff, beer? there's lots
Just depends what you're into.
