2wd vs 4wd

So we are trying to decide between an SUV/crossover or the minivan.

Our good friend and mechanic,  suggested that since I used to driving a fwd car, that we should look into a 2wd SUV rather than the 4wd for many reasons...(1 being it is cheaper to repair if something was to go wrong, 2. I am used to driving a fwd car so there is no difference, 3. it doesn't use as much gas. 4.  I usually don't drive in bad conditions with the kids anyway)

Part of me agrees with him, but then there is the fact that an SUV is much larger than a car, so the added security of a 4x4 or AWD would be nice.

We need something that will give us the option to take other kids with us or even if we have another child.

Re: 2wd vs 4wd

  • I don't know much about 2wd vs 4wd but saw a huge difference between 4wd and awl. I drove a jeep for years before having Liam. I loved my wrangler and how it handled in the snow. When Liam was born, I traded dh for his Subaru forrester. Awl blows away 4wd in the rain and snow. The Subaru gets about 4-5 miles more per gallon. HTH! Good luck in your car search!

  • I have AWD and the first snowstorm I drove home past tons of cars off the road with 2WD made it worth every penny I paid and won't go back.  I love not being scared to drive in snow.
  • I dont know much about mechanics of it but I do know that after we had L we went from driving my scion (2wd) to a new Outback(awd) and while I am sure the repair costs will be more the way it handles is amazing.  I also have to say that for the price Subaru gave us what we were looking for and it has been a fantastic car so far.

  • My mom has AWD in her CRV and loves it!
  • I would generally avoid driving in a snow storm with DS in the car (or at all, really), but it's not always in my control so I would never give up my 4WD.
  • We have both- DH has a 4wd and mine is an awd.  I had a 4wd a long time ago, notice a difference with that (wrangler) and a reg suv 4wd, but still great in snow.  We have been in storms in teh suv and have been safe so far, plus DH drives to work all the time when there are all sorts of storms- I get so nervous still, but more of others hitting him.  I notice my car gripping the raod in storms too and have tested it on ice at times to see what it will do- I can feel the awd kick in.  I don't think I would ever buy a car around here without 4wd or awd, but that is just me.
