Weird Q about Pest Control

For the past few years, we've paid for quarterly pest control through Scott's Lawn. Over the past months, we've seen a lot more bugs in our house. Mostly these long, thin bugs which I'm sure are plentiful around here at this time of year, and I'm sure it's normal to find a few of them in your house. But we will also see a roach or 2, and lately we've also seen some big spiders. (had a major run in with one today!!) MH is insisting that we should cancel our pest control program because he feels that since we're seeing a lot of pests lately, it must be because the program sucks and is a waste of our money. But I'm not sure if he's just being hard-headed. He's saying we should cancel it and he'll have more success just spraying Raid around the house. (He's done that before) We currently pay $72.00/4x a year for the quarterly program. The last time they sprayed was in early June. Maybe the problem is we actually need them to come more often? If you have a pest control service, how often do they come?

Would you cancel it if you were me?

Re: Weird Q about Pest Control

  • Ahh, pest control......I am all to familiar with that these days.....

Long story, but basically I fired our old pest company (had to do with termites though) but we had issues with bugs and mice.  They came quarterly but if I wanted them to come in between scheduled appointments I had to pay them.  It was annoying.  But they were cheap, like $60 a quarter.

I them found another local company (last week) and they came out and sprayed for bugs and it was $65.  We were planning on hiring them to fumigate our house for termites but they refused to show me what the actual contract covered for termites.  They said after they treated our house then I would be able to see the contract.  Umm no.  You are no longer our pest service company.  Turns out they only covered one type of termite in their contract not all wood destroying insects.

I know you don't care/didn't ask about termites but long story short........we ended up going with Terminix.  They are going to be getting our pest control contract as well as a contract for termites once they fumigate (and holy cow, that is expensive to have your house tented and have all the support beams treated......like $3K......then we still have to repair all the damage.......again, long story, basically we got screwed when we bought our house......thinking of talking to a real estate lawyer.......will decide once we see the final repair costs).  Ok, again I got side tracked......Terminix will charge us $70.00 a quarter and they say that EVERY pest is covered (other than honey bees) and if we have an issue with bugs/mice between appointments they will come out and treat the house for FREE.

So my suggestion is check into Terminix.  We have tried to manage our pest services ourselves and we have never really been successful.  There is nothing worse than having a house infested with bugs!!

  • I agree with Kathy, a houseful of bugs is no bueno.  We have Orkin pest service quarterly for carpenter ants and roaches and we never see them in between visits, but if we do, they come out for no charge as many times as we need.  I personally wouldn't cancel.  I don't like spraying Raid (I used to do it in apartments) with small dogs, and it's not that great for people either.  Plus it doesn't really fix the problem.  We cancelled our service for a year when we were paying for the wedding and we started getting bugs again.  Now I'd personally rather sacrifice cable than pest control service.

  • i have seen those bugs lately too - not many though. i have a bug guy who is cheaper than that though, if you want to try someone different. i wouldn't stop it all together.

  • At $72/4 they should come out and spray for free between visits if you find something of concern. I believe the little black bugs you are talking about are common with this much rain lately but the spiders... no excuse.

I can not recommend our bug guy cause he isnt so great

  • We live in the same area and we are also getting those long, skinny bugs AND spiders. We've never had spiders, not even in previous summers. IDK...i think it's just all the rain maybe?? We use Pest Bear and pay $55 every other month. If we see bugs, we just call them and they come back and do free sprays. They've been to our house 3 times this month already.

Anyway, not sure if you should cancel, just wanted to let you know we are having the same problem as you and we use a different company.

Hopefully now that Fall is coming, the bugs will die down..

  • Thanks so much for the info! I'm gonna call our service to see if they can come out for free and spray again.
  • both my parents and my mother in law use anti pesto. they do one big treatment initially both inside and outside and are currently running a special where its no charge for that.. then they do quarterly outside only for around $75 4x/yr.. they will come for free as many times as you call them in between but my parents have said its completely eliminated their bug problem.. the website is http://www.antipesto.com/index.html if u want to check them out.. im going to start service a month or so before the baby comes :)

Thanks, might look into this :)

  • We can't stand our current pest service.  We keep trying ot fire them but the past 2 times they came while we were out and left us a bill.  We just keep refusing to pay.  We've seen more bugs since they started than before we had the service.  The spiders have been the worst.  I'm talking huge wolf spiders and even a couple of brown recluse spiders which are poisonous!
  • Yes, cancel.

Then hire Orkin.  It's $36 per month, and they come every month on the same day - like the 3rd monday of the month.
