Outer Banks?

Has anyone been? It never occured to me that it was a place I had to visit until a guy at work showed me the house (mansion) he is renting in 2 weeks. He said hes been going for years and they all chip in and rent a house. The house he is getting has 12 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. INSANE! It was a pretty penny but divided up it came out to about 2k per family.

Ive always been a NJ girl in the summer mainly because it was closer and where I spent the summers growing up (we own(ed) houses there). But now I am wondering if we are missing out or if its not worth the 9+ hour drive?

Re: Outer Banks?

  • I went to school not too far from the outer banks. If you like the beach it's great. If you only sort of like the beach and want lots of stuff to do like the NJ boardwalk it's not for you.  It's very peaceful.

  • It tends to be less crowded, but there's not a whole lot to do other than hang out at the beach.  It's also a PITA to get to, but very pretty there.

  • My boss does the same thing as your coworker. She rents this HUGE house on the beach every year with her family and a few other friends and their kids. She loves it and has been doing this for several years now. We're not beach people, so it does not appeal to me but they love it there.

  • That's too weird. One of DHs friends who is Nypd too does and is going in 2 weeks or so. DH reLly wanted to go with them but I don't wat to do the long ride with Drew. It's like 6 hours or something. Are his initials CB?
  • Like August, I went to school near there, and we used to go there during college.  It is a very relaxing place but not a ton of things to do.  My cousin bought a house there recently and is trying to talk us into going...maybe next summer!!

  • I love the Outer Banks and renting a house is the best way to do it. It saves you a ton of $. It is much different than the Jersey Shore though. It's laid back and there's no boardwalks or amusement rides. There's pretty much just the beach and the houses with some small towns w/shops and restaurants and mini golf.  The beaches are gorgeous and clean. Most of the oceanfront houses are huge w/tons of bedrooms, but if you go a block or two over, there's more medium sized houses w/about 3-4 bedrooms in case you don't want to be staying w/a ton of people. Since it is a long drive, we usually stay more than a week.

  • It's a beautiful, laid back place. There are wild horses on the northern part of the Outer Banks, but it is super quiet up there. There's more restaurants and stuff to do in Nags Head and Hatteras.
