Advice from group exercise instructors please
Zumba, step, hip-hop, line dance, etc. How did you get started? What advice would you give an inspiring instructor (or obstacles to look out for)? TIA!
Re: Advice from group exercise instructors please
I've been teaching fitness classes for 11 years.
My suggestion is that you don't get a "one trick pony" certification---you won't be very marketable. First step is to get your CPR/First Aid Cert. You'll need this prior to ANY certification. Then, I would look into either ACE (American Council on Exercise) or an AFAA (American Fitness Assoc of America) for a general Group Fitness cert. You'll have to take written tests and study for them. AFAA used to require a practice teaching test as well, not sure if they still do.
Then, you can get specialty certifications from there....Since I did my ACE in 1999, I've gotten certified by Maddog for Spinning, IndoRow, numerous Step Reebok certs (although this is oooooold news!), BodyPump, WillPower & Grace, Peak Pilates MVE, Peak Pilatestick, and a few other one day things. You'll need to get about 15-20 hours of training every 2-3 years to keep your certification up, so all of those little certs will add up and you'll be able to double dip.
HTH!
