Removing cigarette smell???

DH and I moved out-of-state after finishing college. We're expecting our first baby in October. My grandma bought us two really cute onesies from our alma mater. Unfortunately, she made the mistake of having my mother mail them. My mother is a smoker and they smell like she wore them like gloves and smoked all over them. It's bad.

I washed them last night with our laundry detergent and vinegar.  However, they still stink.  They're currently hanging in the sun on my back porch to air dry.

How do I get rid of the stench? They're really cute and I love them, but I won't put them on my baby smelling like this.

  • I think the sun is the best.  It might take a few days

You could also soak them in either baking soda water, or borax water, for like 24+ hours.

This happened to my wedding dress!  I got the finished dress back from the alterations lady a week before the wedding, and it smelled like an ashtray.  I hung the dress out on the porch for several days (watching it every second to make sure no animal came anywhere near the porch), and it eventually faded away.  Perhaps you could soak them in a baking soda solution or sprinkle baking soda on them and leave it overnight?

  • My mother is a heavy smoker as well.  I never noticed it until I moved out and moved in with my hubby.  It took months but I've finally gotten the smell out of my clothes and belongings.  For starters I washed my clothes (2-3 times) in a scented laundry detergent with scented fabric softener.  After that I put dryer sheets in the middle of everything that had to be folded and put them away. As for the things hung up in my closet I used the dryer sheets and also put an air freshener and fan in my closet. It eliminated the smell but it did take a while.  Hope this helps :-)
