We found our house during a visit to the US in January. We put in an offer and it was accepted the day we saw it, and were able to do the inspection the next day, before we flew back to Germany. We closed in March, and moved in a month ago, once our stuff arrived. The house is a 1962 brick construction, fully renovated by a flipping company last fall (so we thought it was the best of both worlds). Now I know why people don't buy flips....
We have had at least 5 plumber calls in the past month, including 2 main line blockages and various leaks. We need to tear out the master shower due to a leak, and the floor in the basement needs replaced due to a sewage leak. The insurance company will come assess the shower and basement this week, but have already sent a water mitigation company who took out the carpet and some of the drywall downstairs after yesterday's sewage leak). In one way it's nice, as there was carpet downstairs, and we aren't fans of carpet. We found the sewage leak yesterday, just before Alexandra's birthday party. So, we asked people to only pee and not flush... luckily it was my family.
Needless to say this is a pain. I thought this summer would be vacation (it was, until we moved into the house). I am returning to work this week, but DH will still be off for a couple more weeks. Our au pair arrives later this week. Her bedroom and bathroom is in the basement, but uninhabitable until they dry out, and the repairs are done. I really hope that she is flexible and understands. We will move her bed, or put a futon into the office in the meantime.
The yard needed a lot of work, including 5 dump trucks of debris (both brush and trash i.e. old water heater) removed. When we bought the house, it was covered in snow, so we didn't realize this. We got a great deal on the landscaping, thankfully. Currently, our yard is a combination of seed and sod. We welcomed Dante, our mastiff, back last week. Of course, he can't have free reign of the yard in it's current state and with the workers here. DH feels this was the worst time to bring him, but we didn't expect the plumbing or yard issues, and with us around, I still think it's better than a month or two down the road when we are both back at work full time.
I haven't see DH stressed like this. I know he wants to feel settled, and hopefully soon. I know in the big scheme of things it's just time and money, but boy it is frustrating. Anyways, I figured I'd let you know what was up with us.
