"All-American" welcome home gift?

One of my friends is returning to the area after working in Mexico City for the past 2-3 years. We're having a welcome home party for him, and the theme is "All-American".  Guests are asked to bring All-American dishes (with extra credit given for midwestern casseroles Wink). I was thinking of getting him a small present - maybe gift basket style with some Apple Pies - like the ones they sell at the gas station, and then some things that could be useful too.

So I guess my questions are - is that a dumb gift? And second, what little, fun, American things could I put in the basket? I'd like for there to be a mix of funny as well as useful.

You guys are so creative and I need all the help I can get!

Thanks!

Re: "All-American" welcome home gift?

  • i think that sounds like a fun idea!  for the basket, what about grilling stuff?  Or frisbees/nerf footballs?
  • You could give little gifts of whatever kind you wish, and just do a red white and blue theme.  I'm not feeling very clever now, but I was trying to think of something less obvious than my first thought, which was American flag stuff.

Is there something he likes that you can buy versions in red, white, and blue?  Beer or wine labels can be R, W, B...

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • American candy, "real" Coke (in Mexico they use actual sugar so it tastes different), ketchup and boxed mac and cheese, peanut butter, root beer, Old Bay   . . . all of mine are foo related.

  • You could buy a little Chevy and a little Ford matchbox car for the basket.  Not useful but kinda cute. What about a football magazine, I forgot the name of it but there is a magazine that comes out in the late summer that is kinda like a scouting report for the NFL. I think there is a college version as well.

  • I think that's really sweet.  And is there really anything that's as American as apple pie? :)  I would put what you think would be nice or funny in a basket and decorate with a red, white and blue ribbon.
  • a flag pin?

and remind your friend that if he doesn't wear one it means he hates America ;-)

  • when are friend was waiting to become a citizen, the running joke we were going to bring her a six pack of bud, twinkies, and oscar mayer hot dogs.
