One of my friends is returning to the area after working in Mexico City for the past 2-3 years. We're having a welcome home party for him, and the theme is "All-American". Guests are asked to bring All-American dishes (with extra credit given for midwestern casseroles
). I was thinking of getting him a small present - maybe gift basket style with some Apple Pies - like the ones they sell at the gas station, and then some things that could be useful too.
So I guess my questions are - is that a dumb gift? And second, what little, fun, American things could I put in the basket? I'd like for there to be a mix of funny as well as useful.
You guys are so creative and I need all the help I can get!
Thanks!

Re: "All-American" welcome home gift?
You could give little gifts of whatever kind you wish, and just do a red white and blue theme. I'm not feeling very clever now, but I was trying to think of something less obvious than my first thought, which was American flag stuff.
Is there something he likes that you can buy versions in red, white, and blue? Beer or wine labels can be R, W, B...
