Hurricane Irene...care to wager?

Full on to hit Jax between Friday night and Saturday morning.

I haven't seen one since moving here with this direct trajectory.  Anyone think it'll actually hit?

Re: Hurricane Irene...care to wager?

  • I think we're about due, honestly... but I'm hoping it just hits close enough to thoroughly soak us but not do any serious damage

  • Yeah... I think we're due.

*fingers crossed for rain, but no serious damage*

  • I really hope not but I have to agree. I really hope there is no serious damage. I'm supposed to be flying back to Jax from Dallas Friday night...this should be interesting. Guess I better pack some extra stuff just in case.

  • I know a lot of people were hoping for Irene to come this way with rain. I hope you guys just get some rain and no damage.

  • I've seen this happen so many times so I'm skeptical but we are due.
  • I think it's still too far away to really know where it's going, but I also think that Florida as a whole has had a long break, so we're all due. Honestly, I'm surprised we haven't had one sooner than this because of how crazy hot it's been.

  • Since I posted this less than an hour ago, it's already been downgraded by the time it gets near us and is no longer a direct hit, but veering off into the Atlantic the way they usually do instead.

ETA: Woops, M - Major Hurricane, so not downgraded to Mild haha.  But still veering off.

  • I say no. The last time we really got hit, it was a crazy year atmospherically and it was like the 3rd one to come in the general area before it actually got any of the city. This year seems pretty tame. If it were late September and the Gulf was at its peak temperature, I might say yes.

  • No way this will hit Jacksonville directly. I don't think it will hit anywhere directly and will veer off into the Atlantic except for maybe a few outer bands. No way.

The local media just likes to get all uppity so they have something to talk about.

  • It'll change every few hours between now & landfall. I think we all know that.

Historical data on Weather Underground has it pretty much going anywhere:

Haha. Yeah. It's actually strengthened in the projection from a Cat 2 to a Cat 3. It does seem to be a bit more east though.

  • I agree that the forecast will continue to change throughout the week. I think we are due for one, but I don't think Irene is the one. I am curious to see if activity increases over the next two months. I read somewhere that the water is warmer than normal this time of year. I hope we get some rain from Irene.

  • For those saying so, of course the forecast will change every few hours.  I love tracking it.

I felt I had to mention it though because I didn't realize my PIP would change WITH the forecast.  My OP mentioned a direct hit to Jax which is obviously not reflected anymore in the PIP.

  • Here's the track from the Weather Channel. I think it will pass east and we'll barely even get any rain.
ETA: I'm w/you though, Madisen. It's fun to track them. :)

    Wow, that's actually pretty cool!

This is what I'm hoping for too.

That is cool. I will be watching this thread all week.
