Moms - Do I really need a humidifier for the nursery?

We have radiators heated by hot water so our house stays comfortable in the winter and the air isn't dry (like forced air heat) so I feel like one isn't necessary.  Thoughts?

Re: Moms - Do I really need a humidifier for the nursery?

  • it was invaluable when milo had colds this past winter, we put it on every night now next to the air duct and it keeps the room cooler.

buy a crane's, the cutesy animals one. we have had 4! and this was the quietest and worked the best. very easy to clean.

  • We have the Crane frog.  I used it once when he was sick and it didn't seem to help.  It also leaked everywhere.  It can't hurt to have one in case you need it but it's not a must have in my opinion.

The thing that helped the kid most with colds was saline drops for his nose, infant tylenol (or infant motrin once they're old enough), Vick's baby rub and lots of extra love.

  • Fwiw we have the elephant, lovingly known as little Roy, because he is a workhorse. Never leaked I wonder if each animal could be different.
  • I never registered for one, but when Charlie got his first little cold at 5 weeks I went out and bought one (just a Vicks one, no animal).

Between the two of them, we used it a lot.  When they are that little, you can't and don't want to give them a lot of meds and it really helps clear them out.

I would recommend it.  If you get one, make sure it is cool mist.

  • We also have the elephant one...we used it a lot last fall/winter. When Oliver was really sick with RSV, the CHOP nurses told us to just run the humidifier all the time through the winter (and use the saline spray/sucker as much as possible).

Just make sure you clean it out every week or so, b/c it can collect mold.

  • We had the same kind of heating and I also thought a humidifier was just one more useless thing to buy, one more thing to clean and where the heck would I store it?! A couple months into parenthood we bought a vicks one (cool mist) and its actually been awesome and I highly recommend it now. We got a filterless one so we would clean it with vinegar and run vinegar water through it (not at night) once every couple weeks and that has kept it pretty clean with minimal effort. Paired with the saline nasal spray I think it has really helped dd get healthy faster and stay healthy.  Shes had one or two minor colds in her near 2 years which to me is incredible considering that I commuted on the dirty EL, DH student taught in high school for awhile, and she started daycare at 10 months so she's been exposed to A LOT of germs as an infant.

  • After reading my post I realize it sounds like I think the humidifier purifies the air or something! I dont meant that, but I think it helped dd to sleep well and keep her nasal passages moist to create the environment her body needed to get better more easily.

  • I registered for the Vicks one thinking we'd never use it. I was totally wrong - we used it all.the.time. It was a pain to clean but worth it's weight. My kid earned the nickname 'Boogie' bc she always had boogers. But the humidifier def helped. It's great white noise, too.

  • We have the elephant and the cow, no problems with either and it was really helpful last year in the dead of winter. Everything just seems dryer at that time of year.

  • Thanks all!

  • My SIL bought one for me when Bella was sick as a baby and had trouble breathing. She bought hthe warm mist Vicks one that had the special Vicks liquid stuff in it. I don't use it often, but when I did use it, it was really great .Totally opened her up.

I think I am going to get the cool mist one for every room for this winter. Andrew gets very dry and has nose bleeds, I get really dry and so does Bella.

  • We registered for (and received) the Vick's cool mist.  If this kid is anything like me, he will be sick all. the. time.

Glad to hear other's have had success with the Vicks!
