Rant about the Boss's Wife

The Backstory...

A good employee needs to create more organized and efficient workspace as well as provide privacy from patients in her personal office and while problem solving her space issues decides to re-arrange the desk with computer work station, 2 chairs & create more usable space.  While doing this, she relocates the phone line to the other wall but the jack was not activated.

I am the clinic director and I helped her move the furniture and told her to shoot a quick email the next day to our business manager to have the jack turned on so the cord would not be a hazard and left at the end of the day feeling very satisfied that the employee had solved her space issue and felt good about her office.

I then (along with my Boss & the business manager received this email from the Boss's Wife.....

Good Morning all, Why does XXXXX need to have this jack activated?  Did she move furniture around without permission from XXXX or I?  Business manager, you and Clinic Director are aware it is a non-written  policy when we moved to this office  no furniture or wall art is to be move without permission from Boss XXXXX or I.  We have made it clear on several occasions, we do not want  the walls scarred by moving wall art or the floors or carpet damaged by sliding furniture.   XXX who gave you permission to move furniture?    Clinic DirectorXXX,  did you allow this this move without our permission? Boss XXX how do you want to proceed?  Please call me. I am very disappointed in this occurrence. XXXXXXX

GEEZZZZ...Rant over. How ridiculous!  What do you think about this email?

Re: Rant about the Boss's Wife

  • I'd need more information. Is she just the boss's wife or does she work there/share ownership? Did you know about this policy? Did the business manager know about this policy? Did anyone mention the rearrangement to the boss or his wife/business partner, while of course outlining the positives that would come out of it? Does the business have a history of people trashing the interiors at a cost to the boss and/or his wife? Etc.

  • It sounds like she's just getting her panties into a wad over nothing. I've been put into a boss/boss' wife situation before and it's NOT pretty. Everyone wanted her to leave, but we couldn't say much of anything...who would we tell?!?

That's hard to deal with, but I think we might need more information. Is she always there? Is she in charge of a certain department? Was the new office her purchase?

  • If she's only the wife, it's a bit much.

If she has an active role in the day to day operations & somebody violated protocol by not getting permission for a move, she has a point.  If there was a problem in the past with security deposits, damage etc so shoudl be able to see where the post was coming from.  She also may be seeking to re-iterate that just b/c this move may have been authorized doesn't mean other staff can make unilateral changes.

I'd let the boss handle this since he was copied.

    If you must respond say:

    Dear Boss's Wife:

The changes were made with my knowledge & participation to improve efficiency & enhance patients' privacy.
