Give it to me straight: how much will a new kitchen cost?

DH and I keep coming back to doing our kitchen reno sooner rather than later, but want to have a sense of whether that's possible before we start looking at designs/calling contractors.

The kitchen is about 12x14 (totally guesstimating, but that's close enough). We don't really want to make huge changes to the footprint, which is cabinets in an L-shape along two walls. We are somewhat limited to what we can do layout wise because we have two doors and a window in the kitchen, and we don't want to get into demo-ing any walls.

I've priced out the Ikea cabinets for our existing footprint and it would be about $2-$4k depending on the door style.

We are perfectly content to buy Ikea cabinets, but would prefer to have them installed vs. DIY.  We also need new appliances and would likely go middle-of-the-road -- not bargain basement, but not luxury brands, either. For counters, I'd probably get granite.

So what do you think is our ballpark?

Re: Give it to me straight: how much will a new kitchen cost?

  • My cousins juts did a similar kitchen renovation - new cabinets, counters and appliances with no change to footprint or flooring, and it came in at $10,000.
  • straight up, back of the envelope, with little info here i would say $10K is about right...if not a little more.

friends just ordered an ikea kitchen (sounds like a similar layout and size) and cabinets and a dishwasher that matched came to about $3700K, does not include fridge, stove or sink....bigger ticket items we all know can add up fast. this is also DIY route so getting it done will cost more.

    god luck!

  • I think it also depends on what you want. I would think a minimum of 10K but depending on tile backsplash, type of granite, how much granite, etc... it can really add up.

Just our granite and new sink were around $6K.

  • I can't give you a full grand total but will tell you the couple unexpected or unaccounted things that drove up our remodel job.

    1. Did you figure in the cost of nobs/drawer pulls at Ikea? And any internal racks/shelving stuff? We used Ikea for our laundry room and nobs/pulls/feet/etc. really upped the total price - not thousands or anything but still...
    2. Granite - every place we talked to said we had to get a new sink also. If you're buying over XX amount you might get one of their standard (low end) sinks free or at a discount but check on that and faucet fixtures.
    3. Detail stuff - light fixtures, paint, backsplash, curtains/rods - all these little things added about $2000 to our total remodel cost.
  • Great post - we're in exactly the same spot (see my post yesterday about IKEA kitchens and install). We're budgeting about $15K but that is before getting labor estimates.  Our kitchen is similar in size - 17x10 - and we need to replace the floor and lighting as well as the cabinets, countertops, etc. The only thing we're likely to keep is our refrigerator since it is only two years old.

We're having it measured and a design done by Osprey Bay - the company that works with IKEA.  We figured it was worth the $200 or so bucks to have that done right and then get some real estimates. I'll post when we get that - probably within the next week.  I'm not sure we'll go with Osprey Bay b/c I'm having trouble getting much info on them.  We'll see.

If you have any contractors in mind who do IKEA kitchens and wouldn't mind sharing, I'd appreciate it.

  • My friend just re-did her small/medium kitchen with Ikea so I just asked her. She spent $4K on Ikea cabinets, $3K on granite countertops and $16K on installation and the dishwasher. The fridge and stove were an additional charge. So, I guess about $25K total.

One thing to keep in mind is to be careful if you get installation quotes from contractors who have not worked with Ikea cabinets before. Most cabinets that contractors work with come partially assembled and they just have to put the large pieces together. Ikea cabinents come completely unassembled with hundreds of little parts. This ended up being a major disaster with my friend's contractor because his quote was for traditional cabinets. He was frustrated when he saw the cabinets and had to increase the price. Also, his workers did not speak English and had never put together cabinets like that before. So, they didn't know how to do it, they made mistakes, they had to return and re-buy stuff, etc. Basically, it was a mess. The cabinets look great though. So, if you do end up going with Ikea, just make sure you get contractor who has installed them before.

  • Also measure your items carefully before buying Ikea. A friend of mine recently reno'd her entire house (they've got big bucks) and used Ikea cabinets (mid-century modern style). Looks gorgeous but as PP noted, the shelving, drawers, etc., are all extra -- and they are finding that the configuration is not great for differeing sized plates, for example (they have to stack the salad plates on top of the dinner plates, which means pulling out the salads to get to the dinners). It's just something to consider and plan for -- my friend admitted she'd be back to Ikea to buy more shelves but she's not sure that will solve the problem as there is still a cabinet height limit.

a different friend found a good contractor (in Alexandria) to assemble the boxes -- again, as a PP noted, that's a big time suck for these cabinets.

that said, in answer to your question, I think you'd be safe guesstimating more like $15k to start - $4k for cabinets (inc drawers, shelves, etc.), $6k for granite (look for installers like Granit-Tech who offer the sink and faucets for free), $4k for appliances (start shopping now when you see the good sales and don't be afraid to buy ones with "dents" if the dents are going to be against a wall....), plus flooring.

and remember the time it takes to do this -- can you live in the house while it's being done? do you have another room you can re-purpose as your kitchen while the work goes on?

  • From our experience DIY remodeling our kitchen with similar dimensions and footprint, I think $15K is where you should start.

If you need recipes for how to live with a microwave, toaster and crock pot while DIYing a kitchen, let me know.

  • When we redid our small-ish kitchen in our condo a few years ago it was about $10K but DH did all the work himself.  But that was gutting the entire thing down to the studs.

I'd say $15K is a good guesstimate and then if it's less, great!

  • I would say $15K. We did our kitchen (smaller than yours) a few years ago. We did the demo ourselves (totally gutted), and had Home Depot install our cabinets. Granite countertops that were installed for us, as well as new sink, stove, micro, fridge and light fixtures. I can't remember our exact figures but that is probably a good estimate.
