Poll: How often do you see your parents?

I am just curious about everyone's situation - my parents are in the process of moving from my USA hometown of Leesburg VA to Austin TX to live cheaper in retirement and be near my sister and her fiance that just moved there early this year. I am super bummed out they won't be living up the street from us when we (HOPEFULLY someday) repatriate. DH's Dad also moved from up the street out to CO, but his Mom is still local for us. WIth everyone spreading out - I am not sure how we will balance seeing them all, or how often it's "normal" to see your out-of-state parents.

Before this year, and thankfully over all our time in Europe so far, we've been able to see everyone about two or three times per year. Usually at Christmas and they would also come visit us sometime in Spring or Summer. After my sisters wedding in November, we've decided not to go home for Christmas this year.

How often do you all see your out-of-state / out-of-country parents?

DH loves to remind me that since my parents moved now there is no reason to "rush home" and he says we won't see them more often. I am totally ready to prove him wrong and I hope to see my parents quarterly AT LEAST. Flights are not too expensive from VA to TX and will def be better than Belgium to TX.

Sometimes I just want to stick my tongue out at him... Stick out tongue

Holiday Vacation

Re: Poll: How often do you see your parents?

  • We live 45 min from my parents and see them usually once a week or so. DH's parents live in Ethiopia and neither of us has seen them since spring 2010, but sometimes we Skype which is better than nothing.
  • 1-2 a year.

I could go more I guess but then again I dont want to use all of my vacation time to go back home.

  • I go home twice a year, for between 2-4 weeks per visit.  I always stay with my dad, so I see him quite a bit when I'm home.  Yes, we do use a huge chunk of vacation time in going home, but for me this is a non-negotiable. I can imagine this number will increase once we have the baby, as my dad is finally planning his first visit (in the 9 years I've been here,) in January.

  • When we lived in Philly and my parents (and their respective spouses) were in CT, about once every 2 months.

When we were in London, twice in a year.

Now in Cambodia, we haven't seen them since we left the states 9 months ago, but we skype at least once a week, especially now that H is gone.

When we move to LA, who knows?  My dad and his wife do summers in CT and winters in FL, my mom and her husband (as well as my brother, SIL and niece) are in FL full time, so hopefully 2-3 times a year we can find them all in one state and combine visits.

    Now jumping domestically.

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • Leesburg, eh? My parents live near South Riding. Did you grow up in the Leesburg area?

I see my parents 2-3 times a year and I tell them all the time they better not move far away from a major international airport. They usually visit me at least once a year over here in the UK.

  • When I lived around an hour and half from my parents (same state), I saw them 4-5 times a year (including Thanksgiving and Christmas).  I haven't seen my parents in over a year now.  Once we move back, I imagine it won't be more than 4-5 times a year...we're not big on visits like that.  The closer I am to them, the more our relationship falls apart...the phone is our friend.

  • Probably 1-2 per year on average, since we've been in London.  That's for both my parents and my ILs.

  • This year abroad I have only seen my dad once and my mom twice.  Usually we see them every 2 or 3 months and I am expecting a lot more when the baby is here.

We see DH's mom once a week, maybe every two weeks.  When we move back I expect to see her at least 2 or 3 times a year.  We see DH's dad maybe once a year.

  • right now its Once or Twice a year - I know once we live in the US we will try and take it in turns, they come to us one year and the next year we'll go to France.

Once we have a child i hope to have my child spend a month ever summer with my folks in France.

  • Once every 3-4 years. It stinks. I'm not so bothered about seeing mum, but it's dad I miss. We're closer than anyone else in the family.
  • When we were in the UK I saw my parent probably every other month, either me flying to the US or them flying to the UK. Now I see them every day that they are in town as they live a mile from us. We see dh's parents 3 times a year.

  • Haven't seen them since May '08 (at our wedding).

When we move back to the States, probably we'll see them 1x/yr.

  • While overseas, about twice a year. Before that we lived in the same state although 8 hours away. We still saw each other multiple times a year between the mutual visits.

DH and I have talked about when we go back. There will probably be one time a year where we make the effort/expense to get us plus two kids to them from wherever in the States we live. When the kids are older, and the grandparents health/ability permitting, we would send the kids off to them on school breaks even if we have to stay at work. But we also know this is a topic we'll revisit and address per situation.

I don't think it's fair to say there is a norm that you "have" to do. It will be situational. DH and I want to show our kids the variety of the States and take them international. My parents took us to the grandparents every.single.year and that was all.we.did. No exploring, no DC vacation to bump up our history, no going some place different, no nothing. We're hoping to strike a balance between always going and rarely going. Just couldn't tell you for sure what that is going to look like.

  • Dad - every day

    Mom - every few weeks.

  • Whilst living overseas, I see my parents at least twice a year.  Sometimes more if they visit us.  DH's parents we see less, but he sees them once a year.

  • We see my parents every 18 months to two years. DH's parents live 10 minutes away, and own a restaurant literally across the street from our flat, so we see them every day.

  • Living overseas, I haven't seen them in two years.

When I lived in the states I was in DC, parents were in MI and CA.  I saw them maybe once a year.  Twice if something big was going on.  Two weeks vacation didn't leave a lot for travel to family AND my own vacations.

  • 1-2 times a year.  DH's parents maybe once in 2 year time period, because it is harder for them to come to us, so its up to us to see them.

    Photobucket
  • We see my parents twice-three times a year.

We haven't seen MIL in almost two years and won't be seeing her any time soon.

We haven't seen FIL in three years but are planning on seeing him in October.

  • My mom's in New Mexico, dad's in Pennsylvania, brother's in Florida... it's a nightmare.

It's varied a lot since we moved here and I assume it's going to change again once (B'H') the baby gets here. One year we didn't go home at all, the next year we were back in the states 4 times. We aim to see each parent once a year at least. It's a bit more difficult with my mom since she's farthest away and has the most financial restrictions so she's only been here twice.

  • It's been once a year, but will probably be less after this year. It's a lot more expensive for my parents to come here (since they need a hotel), and I have neither the money nor desire to fly back more than every other year.

  • My parents live literally 1 mile away from us.  They babysit our pets if we have long days (we're both PhD students who work full time) so we see them several times a week for pick up & drop off.

My ILs live in India & we see them about once a year in the flesh but we talk several times a week since we have Vonage.

  • Thank you everyone for your input. I forgot that I probably will only have about 2 or 3 weeks vacation when I move back to the US. I doubt I would use all of that on going back to TX to see my parents/sister.

I am thinking long weekends here or there, hopefully sending the kids there for a few weeks in the summer (if they enjoy it) and my parents visiting us too. Probably we'll have our own Christmas holidays at home with just us and our (future) kids...that will be nice. Guess it all just depends on the situations that come up - some years will be more than others. And with Skype too - it will be great Big Smile

I grew up in Centreville, VA - not too far from South Riding. I am NOVA born and raised - it's always been home for me. It's really weird my family left.
