Need food suggestions

So I had my 36 week check up this morning and things are looking great and I'm starting to make the changes (50% effaced but no dilation) needed for Cody's arrival in a matter of days/weeks.

I was told I need to cut out all salt.  The exception she will allow is naturally salty foods (fruits or veggies).  She okayed a peanut butter sandwich a day since that's usually what I have for lunch and it's a normal serving of peanut butter.  She said I need to go as far as no tomato sauce, ketchup, bbq sauce, or gatorade.

So now I have no idea what to eat besides fruit and salads.  Any snack or side dish ideas?  Meat isn't an issue because I usually only use pepper and garlic powder on it.

Re: Need food suggestions

  • Why do you need to cut salt? I was never told that.
  • What about some cold salads?  You could do pasta salad with veggies and chicken or an orzo salad with spinach, tomatoes, etc.

  • I have to cut out salt because of the water retention (puffy hands and feet) and arthritis-like pain/lack of strength in my hands.

  • One thing I've been loving lately is whole wheat pasta with basically bruchetta (tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic and some balsamic vinegar)  You can do it hot or cold.

  • Dried beans are amazing for low sodium meals - you can make burger patties or bean salad (olive oil and red wine vinegar, black beans, tomato, avocado, onion, etc). I made a middle eastern dish for Riley that was made from lentils, rice, and elbow macaroni - it was supposed to be made with tomato sauce, but I got no salt added crushed tomatoes and cooked them with onion and garlic as a substitute.

There are some great recipes here: http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/free/Archive.htm and if you search under category "low sodium" on AllRecipes there's quite a few that come up there.

  • Good suggestions.  I'll have to check out that website Courtney.

Okay, now to make it a little harder.  I'm allergic to fresh tomatoes.  I have just recently (in the past couple years) been able to start eating tomato sauce again without too much of a reaction.  Fresh tomatoes still cause issues much faster.
