**Jennrs**

I have heard that about CDs and front loaders, but from what I've read, it seems like it just takes a bit of time to figure out an effective wash routine, and then it's OK. Not true? What do you do for your dipes since you have front-loaders?

Re: **Jennrs**

  • We are going through some major stink issues and we have tried just about everything. I'm thisclose to soaking them in our tub since we don't have that option with or front-loader. :-( If I were you, I would by the front-loader but keep the top-loader and use it for dipes.

We use HE rockin' green or or homemade soap and they get the dipes clean but we still have stinkies. All of the ladies I know with top-loaders don't have that issue. I've heard that with cloth dipes more water is better. I could be an isolated incident, but I'm doubting it.

  • since I am hoping to join in this adventure next spring I did a quick search and found this.

Hopefully it can help you both out! I hope so.... I make my own detergent now, but expect I may have to do something else for cloth dipes.

  • I have found it takes a lot of trial and error to find a system to get the stink out. Since I've never used a toploader since switching to cloth diapers, I don't know how much better it may be with doing it that way.

Jenn, I have soaked the stink diapers in the tub, and do so about every few months. I also do a prewash cycle without detergent to get the lions share of the urine out, then wash with detergent. If they still stink, I'll do another regular cycle without anything. That usually works for regular washing. Once a month I strip with Dawn to get out buildup and that takes a lot of the stink out too.

LOL! My dipes are doomed! I've seriously tried everything suggested in that article and more, and Jill, our method is about the same as yours: pre-rinse with cold, wash with 1 teaspoon detergent, double or triple rinse, line dry. I do a good dawn stripping once a month and the results last about a week. :-(

Have you tried more detergent? I lurked on the CD board when we were having issues, and saw suggestions about just using more soap than what is generally considered okay.

Sorry to hijack the post Heather.

Yep. :-( We used to use 2 T, then 1 T, now 1 teaspoon. Decreasing has helped a bit. THe stink issue is mainly with our BGs. I just bleached the inserts and that seemed to help a bit.

  • Hmm. I'm scared.

I don't think stink issues are limited to front-loaders, though--I have had some issues myself, even with a top loader.

It's actually possible for me to do what you say--we have two laundry hook-ups, one on first floor, one in the basement--and save the top-loader downstairs just in case. Even though it is from 1984 and I'm not entirely convinced it will clean ANYTHING, much less stinky dipes.

  • up until 2 years ago I was using a washing machine from the 80s. My mom is still using her avocado green washing machine from the 70s =) You're good to go with a back up I think.

  • We have always had a front loader with CD. I have used funk rock and it seems to help. I also switched to the super hot water setting, which has helped the most (sanitize but no steam).  I use soft rock formula for our diapers, 2 bags in so far. I realized that our city water over softens it. And I realized we have funk when it is hot out. I have added baking soda / the rocking green diaper pail shake up stuff and it sort of maybe helps. Also I have read to spray the inserts before you put in pail / wet bag helps too.
  • I've noticed that Jack's urine has gotten a lot more stinky as he gets older. I was using Rock'n Green detergent, but recently changed up my whole wash routine, and his diapers don't smell at all (we had been having ammonia issues as well). This is my current routine:

     For about 9ish diapers-

Extra large load size, hot water, 3/4 of a full scoop of Free and Clear Tide powder detergent, and a Downy fabric softener ball filled 1/4 of the way with vinegar. I do a regular wash and then an extra rinse after the regular wash. Machine dry the inserts, line dry the pockets.

Jennrs - I agree with whoever said using more detergent might be better. I used to use just a tablespoon of the RnG, but as Jack got older, it just wasn't enough soap to really clean the diapers.
