Angelcare monitor question

This is probably a stupid question, but...

The manual says to put the pad under the mattress. Does it really pick up baby breathing or any light movements like that? Or did any of you go against the book and put it on top of the mattress (but under the sheet)?

My dad surprised us with the monitor today knowing we were looking at it for peace of mind... But I'm confused as to the placement - it doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Angelcare monitor question

  • Under the mattress will pick up even the slightest movements!  We have a super thick mattress and it has worked since day 1!

    Ps not a stupid question!

  • Under....they also suggest putting down a piece of plywood or a piece of cardboard or something and sandwiching it between that and the mattress. It does work....Once A was old enough to scoot around and he would get himself right up to the side of the crib it would go off cause it couldn't sense his breathing anymore.

  • Our crib has a spring bottom, so we had a piece of wood cut to fit at Home Depot or Lowes. We set the sensor on that, and then put the mattress on top of it. Works perfectly.

  • How big is the pad? M rolls all over, would it be worth it for us?

The pad isn't very big, but it works well. I think you can actually order one that has 2 pads, but we have always had a single one. We have the digital version that tells the room temp, etc. Love it.

I think it is worth it, but some people think it is a gimmick and a waste. If you planning on having any more children, then I think it is well worth the peace of mind.

It would be worth it...Austin moves all over too, the only times it has gone off as a result of that was when he was on his side with his back pressed up against the crib as far away from the pad as possible. That only happened a couple times though. There is also a sensitivity setting that you can adjust. I think we always had ours set on the middle setting, but I bet if we turned it to the highest then maybe it would have still sensed him when he got to the edges. I guess I never thought about that until now though! LOL!

  • We also used a flat plywood that DH cut in the garage.  The sensor pad goes on top of that and below the mattress.  The sensor pad would be uber uncomfortable to lay on if it was just between the mattress and the sheet.

We also have the digital one that tells us the room temp.  This is the best monitor on the market IMO.  Much more peace of mind for me than the video monitors.

I do have to warn you though - the first time the alarm goes off, your heart will stop. I think I flew up the stairs in about 2 seconds.  He was in a deep sleep and clear up against the edge of the crib.  The sensor is amazing!

  • Okay, so next question... Where do you put the pad? Do you put it smack dab in the middle of the crib? Or wherever you lay LO?

Because my back has been acting up, I can't reach the middle of the crib to lay DS down -- he's close to the middle, but not quite. Plus, DH has a constant bad back, so if I put him in the middle, he won't be able to reach him.

  • I had our pad in about the middle. It kind of moves a bit when you put the mattress down, if your mattress is a tight fit like ours.
