moms whos dh are teachers

did your husband get any vaccines before the baby came? my dh teaches special ed at a middle school and this year is assignment is different from last year. he is not pushing in to classes and working with a large population but has his own self contained class with 5 students who are have a e/d (emotional disability). im worried with the start of school he might pick up some germs and bring them home to the baby. not to mention he coaches football after school.

what vaccine would you recommend? i want him to get both the whopping cough and flu shut but dont know if both are necessary.

Re: moms whos dh are teachers

  • I don't mean this to be snarky -- and it may come off that way so I apologize in advance if it does --

but, I'm not sure how pushing into classes vs working with a self contained class of e/d kids puts him at different risk of germs... he's still working with the same germy kids regardless of in a room vs pushing in...

i think they put the whooping cough vaccine in the flu shot now (pertussis) - that is what the drs often reccomend the families to get.

  • ditto k about what classroom. for ed kids make sure rabies is gievn too :/ my dh is a fireman and steps in feces and urine, he gets shots too. lol.  i think everyone should get shots no matter what occupation.

i meant it in away that he used to teach 5 classes a day with 30 kids per class. different kids in each class so he was exposed to more kids rather than just the 5 kids he is going to have all day long. i know if there are germs its going to be in the air no matter what. i just didnt know if the flu shot was enough or he should also get the whopping cough vaccine. i never really worried about it when we were working because it was just us so we never had the flu shot.  but its good to know that there that they put the whopping cough vaccine into  flu shot.

    thanks for the info!

  • Whopping cough is part of the DTAP now. So it you have a current Tetanus you can't get it.   I don't' get the flu shot typically but I know they reco it for those that work with kids.

Just lots of hand washing and maybe a clothes change when the flu season really kicks in.
