Credit Card??

Several of my coworkers and I going to a conference in a couple of months and we are reserving our rooms and submitting travel requests. One of my coworkers just told me she doesn't have a credit card and I will be reserving her room with mine and getting reimbursed for both.

I totally am judging her for being 33 w/o a credit card. I know they are dangerous for some... and yes they did get me in trouble when I was 18... but I have learned. But how do you travel, rent a car, what if your in an emergency? Do I rely on my cc too much?

Re: Credit Card??

  • Dude, I know people who don't have BANK ACCOUNTS and they are adults (coworkers). Sorry if I sound judgy, but seriously?

Maybe she got into trouble and ruined her credit so much that she can't have one?

We use ours a ton but pay them off 100% each month - we like to get the bonus points from Amex, etc.

I think credit cards are key for an emergency...unless you always have like $5K in checking and can use your debit card! or if you have really good overdraft coverage...

I do think you can rent a car, stay at a hotel, etc with a debit card but it puts a hold on your money that is higher than the real cost, and some people can't afford that.

  • Ummm, you must not have heard the story of my ex-BFF's husband-- who has no SSN (his choice, he's a US Citizen) which means-- no bank account, no credit card, no license, no insurance, no nothing. Love it.

Her ex also didn't have a bank account or credit card either but he was even more of a major loser (he was 35 and still living with his parents and drove his mother's car when he needed to go places).

Anyway, there could be a reason someone doesn't have a credit card but sometimes people think they are better off because they can't get into debit... or don't need one.

  • You can rent a car/hotel on your debit, but I don't like the idea of a hold on x-amount more than what the cost of the car or room is. Thats just me.

We are trying to move away from using our debit cards, and putting everything on the cc, and paying it off monthly, for the points but more for security reasons. I don't like the fact if our wallets were stolen someone would have direct access to our bank accounts even if we are protected I know its a hassle to be reimbursed.

I don't understand not having a bank account either...

He can't get a job either, unless it's cash under the table. Some people are just weird!!! (and trust me, we see them all here at work)

That's what I was thinking. So weird!

I agree that having a credit card is pretty basic once an adult and a bank account is almost a must.

ugh, don't get me started... he works under the table.... I cannot be friends with her anymore because all I could do was worry about her safety if anything happened to him (he doesnt pay into SS or medicare) and it freaks me out (his job is rather dangerous). It's an anti-government lifestyle that I can't handle.

  • Andrew didn't have a credit card until we got married.  I think the same goes for his brother.  I don't see anything wrong with not having one although it sounds a little odd for this day and age.
