White Water Rafting

Has anyone ever been?  DH and I are headed to Maine in a week and a half for my brothers wedding and we are thinking about going White Water Rafting.  We think it would be a blast but don't know many people who have done it...

Re: White Water Rafting

  • I went with my family, probably about 15 years ago. We went down to West Virginia, so I'm not sure how it would compare to Maine. It was a lot of fun.  I guess the only thing I might be worried about is if the water was too cold - which wasn't really a problem in WV.  Other than that, what's not to love about being out in nature, on the water, with the occasional adrenaline rush from the white water.

  • FI and I did it with my almost my entire family in TN this past Memorial Day weekend.  I was pretty nervous when we first started, but as soon as we did the first rapids and I knew what it was like, we had a TON of fun.  If you are a newbie, just make sure you book with a place that has experience with this.  And then, when you get there, make sure you get a good guide.  (My mom kinda got a bad one and, out of the 4 or 5 boats my family had, that one lost the most people overboard.)  You would probably want a mix of 3 to 4 rapids (1's and 2's are almost like floating down the river).  I definitely say do it!

  • Thanks guys!  I think it will definitely be a cool experience!  We are looking at a trip that is 12 miles long, and ranges from Class II to Class V.  The site says that it is "suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike", so hopefully as a White Water Rafting Newbie, we'd be okay.

  • A while back we went on a family vacation to do White Water Rafting.  They were baby rapids though.  That was a lot of fun.  We all want to go back and do bigger rapids next time.  I would say go ahead and do it.  You will love it.

That should be good.  I would only second the other poster's response that the water could be cold.  You might want to check on water temps.

Worst comes to worst we can rent wetsuits for $15 a person!  But that is definitely a good point!
