Virginia ladies - Earthquake?

Did any of the other Virginia or DC ladies feel the earthquake just now?

I was sitting on my deck working and the deck and house started to shake.  We're near I-66, so I thought it was just a big truck.  But then it kept moving.

I see on the National Geological Service that they recorded an earthquake down between Richmond and Charlottesville.  I'm guessing that was the center.

My cleaning people are here and were so scared they just ran out of the house.

Any of my West Coast ladies have any advice for what to do in an earthquake?  Am I safer in the basement?  Top floor?  Deck?  Outside?  Tornadoes, I'm good but no clue for an earthquake.

ETA: Casperdy?  Everyone else okay?  They're estimating that it was a 5.8.

  • I'm in NY and I felt it! Just a slight shake of my chair though, not the whole building shaking or anything.

  • I'm in SW VA and we felt it. Everyone froze on the street. We looked so southern just staring at each other trying to figure out what happened lol.
    Happiest place on Earth!

  • apparently we had one here too.  I think the first 50 statuses in my FB newsfeed are about it, lol.
  • I felt it here in Columbus. It was strange. Just slight shaking. I first thought it had to do with construction outside our building.

  • Our whole building shook here in Western NY. I first thought that I was just dizzy--it gave me a sick, queasy feeling. Then realized that my whole cubicle was shaking, and other coworkers started to make comments. Felt just like the one we had last summer, when the center was somewhere in Quebec--only this one was longer.

Doesn't sound like there's really any damage any place--so strange, though! I'm sure it must've felt pretty strong down there in VA.

  • Apparently Boston felt it too. I work a couple towns north, and felt nothing, but my boss's wife just called to check on things. Her building was evacuated.
  • Yup, people are feeling it all over the east coast. Felt it here in metro Boston.

  • I felt nothing .... but I have FB status updates from everyone else saying that they felt it too.

Guess I'm oblivous to things going on around me.

I'd like to keep it that way.

    Naive.

  • I am about 45 minutes south of DC and it was strong here. I was getting ready for work while both kids were napping when it happened. I was freaked out and so were the kids. DH was in DC at the time working and was evacuated and sent home. My phones just started working again, but the internet was working the whole time.

My mom is from CA and said that if aftershocks happened or another earthquake to go outside.

  • Felt it here in Northern Va! We're on the top floor (4th floor) and our building was shaking/rolling like crazy! All the cube walls and doors were shaking, the ceiling lights were swinging, etc. Biggest one I've ever felt! It was freaky.
  • DH just said there was one in PA, so maybe that's the one NY girls felt. Apparently it was felt in Cleveland, but we didn't feel it at our house (abuot 45 minutes west of Cleveland).

So...one in Colorado, one in VA, and one in PA. And earlier in the year there was one here, centered in Lake Erie. WTH?! LOL

  • I'm north of Boston and I felt it!  I was sitting at my comp in my classroom typing some stuff and felt a gentle swaying.  I honestly thought I was just dizzy!  I was like whoa is everything shaking????  I did get up and go to the doorway just in case!  My mom called me a little bit after and asked if I felt it.  I was like phew, I'm not going crazy!  Some people at work didn't really feel it and another woman just thought she was dizzy too!!
  • Here is what we learned growing up:

A basement is not safe(most CA homes don't have them) because the building could collapse in on you.  We always practiced bracing in a doorway--it is the strongest part of a room and stuff can't fall on you.  If you can't get to a doorway--get under a desk away from a window if possible.  If you can get outside stay away from powerlines and away from buildings.

Looking at the National Geological Survey map, it looks like it was just the one in VA today but it was big enough to be felt in OH, PA and NY.  Although it shows a small one near Youngstown, OH last week.

  • We felt it at work. Got queezy/lightheaded. We work in an old mill building. Could not believe we felt it.
  • I didn't feel anything in southeastern, MA, but they evacuated DH's building in Boston because of the shaking.

  • Nothing in Augusta... but we're getting a hurricaine this week. Joy.
  • Apparently it was felt on Martha's Vineyard with the president is. I can't believe we didn't feel it where I was.

  • YES! It was sooo crazy.  It was definitely far more intense and longer than the earthquake that had its epicenter in my town last summer.  Liam's school is off this week so we are home, and I am sooo thankful! Traffic is a hot mess in this area tonight!!
  • My mom and sister felt it in NJ. My mom said everything was rattling in the house. I didnt feel anything here in Georgia.
  • I had just arrived at the funeral home and it was fairly strong (we're about 45 mins from DC). It started shaking and I thought it was someone on the roof. My dad said that's an earthquake and headed outside. By the time I comprehended what he said, it was over. The worst part was I couldn't male or receive calls and my mom doesn't text. She had the kids and the fact that I couldn't get in touch with her had me freaked out.

  • I'm late, but that was so crazy yesterday!  I was in the stacks at the university library, and all the stacks and books started shaking. I thought to myself, "I am about to be on the news. I am going to be buried under books. This building is collapsing" etc etc.  I dashed out from between the stacks to the open space, and all the students were just minding their own business!!  A few looked around, but most kept working.

I WANTED TO SCREAM AT THEM!  I couldn't believe no one else was freaking out.

Anyway, then the fire alarms went off and we were evacuated.  Fun times.

  • I'm late but thought I'd add to it anyways. Recently in CA they changed "what you should do" in an earthquake. As Amybyrd said, growing up it was to go under a desk/table, doorway or outside. Now, you aren't supposed to go under a desk/table, cuz something could fall on it. If you can't get under a doorway or outside, you should crouch next to something tall and strong, ie fridge. That way if something large falls, it will land against the fridge creating a triangle, and you will be protected crouched down and the bottom.

ps. we had an earthquake (that I didn't feel) about 40 minutes ago.
