Earthquake.

So I have apparently survived my first ever earthquake, right here in central Virginia. It was scary.

Here's the details:

I'm in Richmond, so that's 41 miles from the center.

Re: Earthquake.

  • I totally missed it. My coworker said she felt her chair shake. We are on the 5th floor in our building. But a couple of my friends said they felt it. WHAT?!
  • Wow, I heard it only went up to DC, but it was felt in Boston?! Holy crap.

  • I am about 30 miles north of NYC and we felt it really strong! I think it lasted for like 45 seconds, don't know how that compares to normal earth quakes.

Our office is in an old house from the early 1900's so at first we just looked around at eachother like uh whats that, then the house made a creaking cracking noise and we all jumped up and went outside.

Hope everyone in that neck of the woods is doing alright! Pretty crazy for my first ever earthquake.

  • I felt it in North Jersey! This is my first day working out of my new office, and I thought that there was something wacky with the building until I heard there was an earthquake. My computer monitor was shaking, and my chair felt like it was vibrating... it was really weird.

  • Weird...I'm in Florence SC & at about 1:55 I was sitting still at my desk & felt like my chair was rocking a bit. I though maybe I was nuts or having a dizzy spell or something but I guess I felt the earthquake! Hmmm...

  • So scary!  I hope everyone is alright and not shaken up too bad.  Second sort of major one in the last couple of days (one in Colorado yesterday) so hopefully there isn't a "big" one coming!

  • Yeah, it felt like the ground was rumbling, not so much swaying. I just can't believe it was so close to where I live! I'm still shaky now just thinking about it. Thank goodness my building is concrete, it didn't move too much.

I used the website that you posted to record what I felt. freaky that I'm so far away. I don't think I would have felt it if I hadn't been sitting stock still at my desk reading an email on my iPhone.

  • I lurk on some national boards and people felt this thing in Toronto! It didn't really feel that bad, I can't believe it traveled so far.

  • My mom just called and her co-worker actually saw the concrete shaking outside of their office building (in Richmond). Crazy! Hope it wasn't a "foreshock" and this was it.
  • Wow Rachel. I wish my local news had more information because I feel like everyone is talking about DC and no one gives a rats ass about Richmond, which was way closer! I'm in a 2 story building, so things are pretty okay. Verizon cell towers are down though so I can't text my husband anymore. :(

Try again - we couldn't get through to my dad for a while and it just went through. Not sure if he's verizon or not. He said he was on the golf course and didn't feel a thing!

  • i'm south of Boston but didn't feel it...  poop!

    but, creepy!

glad you ladies are okay who are close!

  • We felt it a LOT in Bethesda, MD.  Our office is in the ground floor of a concrete/brick building and we shook for probably a good minute.  The scary part is it started small and just kept building so we weren't sure how long or how much stronger it was going to get!  Scary!

  • Well...my first experience with one too!

Our buildings in downtown baltimore were literally swaying side to side and up and down. I'm sitting at my desk and the floor begins moving, and as our building has floor to ceiling glass walls, I could look right out and see everything (including my office) swaying and bucking. Man....and we were only close to Northern Virginia! Can't imagine what it was like at the epicenter!

  • This is all so crazy! I have never felt an earthquake, which I am glad for in the long run, but it would be kind of cool to experience a small one! So glad everyone is okay!

  • It was one of the most bizarre feelings!  I was at my desk and I kept thinking that what was happening wasn't real...until the rest of my office was having a cow about it!  :)

Seriously?  This is exactly what you are NOT supposed to do, at least according to California!  Most people are injured in earthquakes when they try to exit a building because there is no longer a roof to protect you from falling debris!  And I would think the Californians would have this one right :P

I HATE earthquakes!  They are so scary - 5.8 is a decent size, but typically doesn't cause much damage here in CA

Well we had to leave after the earthquake ended. We were still in there while it was shaking but then they made us leave we weren't allowed back in until they checked the integrity of the building. We don't deal much with this so its all new to us.

  • I can't believe how far it reached, either!!  We didn't feel it here in the midwest, but I'm surprised about Toronto!  That's only a 4.5 hour drive from Detroit!

    Glad everyone's ok!!!

  • We definitely felt it here.  Growing up in Los Angeles I have felt them before, but I was in the tunnels control room when it hit, which is un-anchored, so we seriously started swaying like crazy, the group of us in there ran out pretty quickly.  The effects were definitely magnified in there.  We still felt it once we got out into the regular building, but no where near as scary.

No damage here that I have heard about, but DH's grandparents live in Fredricksburg VA, which is pretty close to the epicenter and they had some damage.

  • Laurie I'm happy to hear you all are alright after receiving bad news on how to react to an earthquake! My family did the same thing in Maryland because they just didn't know. Except for my Grandma; she was vacuuming and didn't feel a thing. :)

  • Late to chime in but I felt it here in NJ too (and my mom felt it on Cape Cod)... was at my computer surfing and nursing Milo and DH was next to me.  We both felt it and wondered what the heck was going on.  My years in CA clued me in, but then I started to worry as we live in a brick building.  It shook for so long.  And, I won't lie, we're close enough to NYC what with all the 9/11 talk that the thought of terrorism crossed our minds.  Thank goodness it was "just" an earthquake.
