Speaking of nerdy reads...
... I was up until 1 am last night (and trying not to claw my back off) finishing off Jane Eyre. Holy cow, why have I never read this before? It was SO good!
Anyone else have any books that they're surprised they enjoyed? Bonus points for ones that typically make dry English class lists!
Re: Speaking of nerdy reads...
If you haven't read The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde now's the time while Jane Eyre is fresh in your mind.
Let's see, I was surprised that I really loved medieval/Renaissance English lit. Everyone else seems to hate it. I dig the Second Shepherd's Play and read it every Christmas. Very geeky.
I don't know if this make English class lists, but Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace is a book I'm enjoying. I'm so not into postmodern lit, but this one works for me.
I love Jane Eyre. It's such a good book. I'm not reading anything particularly good now.
I love Jaspar Fforde! I totally have a thing for battenburg cake now because of the Thursday Next books. My encounter with the Eyre Affair a few years ago had been (up until two days ago) my only exposure to the novel Jane Eyre. I should totally go back and re-read it; I'd probably get more of the jokes now!

I've been trying to read some more classic books, but unfortunately some of the ones I have read, I really haven't liked too much (Little Women, Love in the Time of Cholera, Catcher in the Rye). I'll have to give Jane Eyre a try (it is on my Goodreads list to read).
I did really like 1984 and didn't expect to.

I love Fitzgerald, and Hemmingway too. For anyone who wants to read about Hemmingway, rather than actually read Hemmingway, the Paris Wife was quite good. It's about Hadley Hemmingway, and their lives together in Paris.
I don't think it's boring - I just really dislike Holden. I read it the summer I was 18 while trying to impress a guy with my incredible breadth of literature - so that may have something to do with it. I think I read On the Road, Alias Grace, Frankenstein and Plato's Symposium along with Catcher in a two week span. Oh the things we do to impress people. We did end up dating for 2 years so... I guess it worked.
