daycare prices

what do people with more than one baby do?  i have keira in a daycare 3 days a week and then 2 days w/ ariana at a sitter.  the 2 stops is killing me and i now want keira there f/t b/c it is basically preschool at this point.  i got the #'s and am just freaking out at the total cost of it all and with my commute from hell thrown in, i am basically just working to pay daycare and parking :(  this really made my final decision that I don't want any more kids....enlighten me please...what do people do?

Re: daycare prices

  • Try the working moms board on tb. I told dh if we have a second we need to prepare for me to quit bc dc is too damnn expensive for 2.

  • i decided not to go back to my other job, instead im working part time from home now for my family's business, had i not gotten this it would have been a part time night thing just for some extra cash. i am far from the breadwinner in this house so after a toddler and infant in daycare, i would have prretty much broke even so it wasn't worth it to me.

  • I am on the iPad so I apologize for no paragraphs. But a few things. 1) The WMs board is where I heard the good point that daycare just gets cheaper as your kids get older. Even if you are essentially paying for daycare for a few years, in the long run you still come out financially ahead in the long run as opposed to leaving the work force. That is hardly comfort if what you really want is to SAH, but if you generally like working, I think it is definitely a bright spot to consider. 2) I did this too, so I totally get it, but I hate how we as women assume the cost of daycare only on our careers. You never hear a guy say "Ugh, I am just working to cover daycare, why bother?". no one ever thinks it is a waste for a guy to work. We all do it, I just wish we didn't, mainly because i think if mothers weren't seen as so disposable in the work place, we would have so many more family friendly work options. But we don't, so we leave or reduce our hours like i did, and the cycle just goes on.

  • i 100% agree with amy.  i love working and the fulfillment that going to the office and doing my job gives me every day.  i am torn with the little man in daycare but both dh and i are in agreement that it is better for us mentally and financially for me to work.

since we are planning on a second (and third?) child we are looking into both having more flexible jobs where we can work compressed schedules (4- 10hour days, or 9hour days and 1 day every other week off) and/or work from home.  if we can do that we will find a dc where you pay/day used not by the week.  we have also discussed finding a nanny if this is the case since they would be cheaper than dc in these parts if you have more than one kid.

i do find it a bit disturbing i am looking to change my career based on future spawn when i have a not-even 4 month old but i guess it is repsonsible parenting.  having joey made me realize that i am okay not being the hard charging ladder-climber if it will make our lives better.  dh is on board with some changes to his career as well.  not just me making the sacrifice.

  • thanks for your input ladies...

i was always against daycare centers...i have now been on both sides of the spectrum (in home sitte vs. daycare) and to be honest, my opinion has changed for many reasons.

with keira being 3-1/2, she is starting teh preschool class and is LOVING it.  i am now moving the baby over b/c i lake the center that much.  it just really bums me out to see the actual $ amount + the commuting time and $.

  • The #1 reason DH and I are waiting to have another baby is daycare cost (which is a common modern day shame IMO). For many reasons it makes more sense for both of us to work and just juggle the cost of two in daycare, but its not exactly easy to just come up with an extra thousand dollars a month for a second in daycare! We have been planning for months now on how to arrange our budget so that we can have the money available for daycare a year or two from now. How ridiculous?! But I dont see any other way. DH and I both have semi flexible schedules so Im really hoping that we can both arrange to work from home different days of the week to reduce or eliminate daycare for the future spawn for at least the first year or two. But we'll see.
