anyone know anything about yard sales?

like how to have one?

I've never done one and my neighborhood wants to do a big, neighborhood-wide yard sale. everyone would be responsible for their own stuff in their own yard, but we'd all do it on the same day/time.

other than posting signs around, where should we list it? if we were to make a map of houses that are participating, is there a way to publish this so yard sale goers could find it?

thanks!

Re: anyone know anything about yard sales?

  • Craigslist! I think there is a certain section for them.  You can also check your local papers, we have the gazette, and place an ad for a nominal fee.
  • craigslist for sure & also do y'all have any neighborhood/civic associations?  I yours & any neighboring associations put it in their newsletter.
  • Definitely on Craigslist. Also make sure that you include key words in your ad of what will be sold because a lot of people search based on what they are looking for such as children's clothes, toys, books, maternity clothes, tv's, electronics, etc. If you include a list of things that may be sold, then you are more likely to show up in people's searches. Here's an example of what I mean:

I would also put signs in near your neighborhood on major roads advertising it up to a week ahead of time. That sounds like fun!

  • craigslist/signs are great - also maybe something to indicate which houses are participating in the yard sale ( small banner from $1 store or maybe even a pinwheel you know ? )
  • When my neighborhood does one, they create maps that highlight all of the houses who are participating, and everyone has a stack of them at their house so they can give them to people who come to shop.

  • When our neighborhood does one, we have a list of all participating houses on a map, which is available at each yard sale location.  It works great.
