Virginia Wine Tour

DH & I were thinking of doing a wine tour of a few of the Virginia wineries in October with another couple we are friends with.  Anyone ever been and have recommendations in terms of accommodations or particular wineries to visit?  TIA.

Re: Virginia Wine Tour

  • Which area did you want to visit? I think there are almost 200 wineries in VA. We went to a few in Charlottesville but I don't remember all of the ones we went to. I do know we didn't enjoy any of the wines at Jefferson Vineyards. If you went to Charlottesville there are lots of other touristy things to do. The Williamsburg Winery is good as well if you want to add some Williamsburg attractions. I don't think there are many other wineries in the area though.
  • We went to Charlottesville for a friends bachelorette weekend and it was awesome.  I didn't partake in the wine tastings because I'd just found out 2 days before that I was PG, but I still had a lot of fun and all our friends that did the tastings really enjoyed it.  We stayed at the Omni hotel, my friends sister rented a limo bus to take us around to about 4 of the different ones. One we went to was Pollak Vineyard, which I think was everyone's favorite, at least that is where most of the wine we purchased was from.  I can't remember the others, but we went to 2 or 3 others that were also fantastic.  I really want to go back when I can actually sample the wines, it's one of the places we've thought about for our 5 year anniversary.

  • I've been to wineries in Charlottesville twice and really liked both the town and the area - there is a huge local food movement and a lot of good, but reasonably priced restaurants.

My favorite wineries were Pollak and Blenheim (Blenheim is owned by Dave Matthews and has a BEAUTIFUL tasting room and very informative staff, and the wines are very good). I also liked King but not as much as the other two. Veritas is in the same area as King and Pollak and is very popular - but I thought the staff was really snobby both times I visited, and while the wines are good, the tasting is kind of a rip off.

If you like beer, Starr HIll and Devil's Backbone are in that area and also very good.

If there is one thing I'm good for, it's remembering random stuff.

No clue!  But thank you for the references everyone, I shall share with the others!
