If you make your own curtains...

How important is lining them?
[Poll]

Re: If you make your own curtains...

  • That depends on the material you are using to make the curtain. Also where the curtain will be used and if it has shears behind it. All of my windows have blinds so its not as crucial. I also use shears in the living room behind the curtains. In the bedrooms I have them lined with black out material. I like my bedroom pitch black when I sleep. Really it all comes down to preference and the area the curtain is used.

  • Like pp said, it depends on the fabric, whether or not I need the room darker, and whether or not the window has blinds or sheers (not shears...I never keep scissors in my window ;P).

Properly lined curtains really do lay nicely and look more expensive.  They look nicer from the outside, too.  I like my windows to look uniform from the outside.

I agree and will add that lining them also keeps fading of the main fabric to a minimum.  We have blinds, but the fabric still fades.

     This...  and This...

  • LOL, I would spell sheers wrong!  I live in Washington........so sun fading fabric, never crossed my mind. :P That is defiantly something to consider when making curtains.

I posted pics of the wedding dress I made Justinlove. :) The bridezillas dress. Its way down on the page.

  • It depends on the room, the amount of light I want to let in, and how permanent the curtains are.  I quickly become bored with kitchen/bathroom themes and colors, so I'm not as likely to put too much effort into the curtains as I am for a different room.  Also, if the main fabric was expensive, I'll probably line them.
  • We don't have central air, so keeping our house cool w/o cranking up the window unit is important.  I didn't make the curtains that are in our living room or dining room, but they're lined.  We also have lined curtains in our bedroom.  I am planning to make curtains for the nursery and plan to line them. We have mini-blinds also, but the more we can do to keep it dark/cool in there, the better.
