Philly nestie looking for info on Newport...
We have never been to RI, and are looking into Newport for a long weekend. Is this a good area to visit? Is it kid-friendly (we have a 4, 3, 1yr old)? Any reccs on what to do, or where to stay? TY :-)
Re: Philly nestie looking for info on Newport...
I've never stayed overnight in Newport, so no real recs from me for places to stay.
As far as things to do, check if there is a festival going on at the Newport Waterfront Events (http://www.newportwaterfrontevents.com/)
Depending on the patience level of your kids, it's fun to take a tour of one of the mansions. There are a few beaches and parks, TONS of restaurants. If you're coming for Labor Day weekend, Thomas the Tank Engine is on the Newport Historic Railroad (http://www.newportdinnertrain.com/docs/dowt.htm). If you're going to be here between November and April, Save The Bay offers seal sightseeing tours on Narragansett Bay that I've enjoyed (http://www.savebay.org/Page.aspx?pid=328). I've heard good things about the Secret Garden walking tour, but I'm not sure how easy that would be with 3 little ones.
Pack a picnic, buy a kite, and go to Breton Point! There are always a million kites and it's such a nice lawn to sit and watch (and play). I believe it's a State Park.
I would call ahead for mansion tours...I'm not sure strollers are allowed?
I like to do harbor cruises - not sure if your kids would be into it. There are a few companies that do it and it's nice to check out the yachts and pimp houses on the water. Rose Island is neat, too.
I've never stayed down there, but you might find better deals in Middletown or Portsmouth.

i've gotten good deals on priceline's "name your own price" if you put (i forget, either 3 or 4 star in) and choose only newport (not surrounding areas) the only options on priceline are hyatt, viking, and marriott which are all really good hotels.
i got a 300+ room for 100 dollars.
Good luck!
