Crazy!!! It felt like someone picked up our property and there was some back and forth motion. My cats freaked out...the ceiling fan touched the ceiling!! My neighbors all went into the street -- Zach - a navy-seal in training, yelled out is everyone ok?
Sheesh...crazy!!! I live outside philly...the epicenter was not far from DC.

"People talk about escapism as if it's a bad thing... Once you've escaped, once you come back, the world is not the same as when you left it. You come back to it with skills, weapons, knowledge you didn't have before. Then you are better equipped to deal with your current reality."

wow, I'm glad you're ok!
it was my first time feeling an earthquake, but I'm in atlanta so it wasn't very dramatic.
I was sitting at a redlight when my car started rocking. There were no passing trucks, so I thought it must have been a subway train going underneath me. About 5 mins later the radio started talking about the earthquake and how it was felt here.
One of my friends that is a DC police officer posted "Damage to Washington Monument....everyone is out of and no injuries reported" on fb.
I'm about 40 miles from the epicenter. My school building (where I was at the time) shook pretty heavily. The light poles outside continued swaying for at least 3 minutes afterward!
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
We must not be too far apart- it was pretty strong shaking here too. Worsened by the 3 levels of garage parking below the 5 stories of glass office building I was on top of. It was really scary from where we were, and I lived in CA for a long time. It was really a completely different experience- almost silent, and really violent shaking instead of the more rolling quakes they have there.
Stand up for something you believe in.
Don't feel bad, I live in the Midwest and there have been several earthquakes over the last few years that I've been the only one not to feel.
I'm glad everyone is ok...and that no buildings were destroyed - we don't need more people out of work - for any reason!
I kinda thought it was cool but totally scary ... I heard a loud pop before it happened...like a bird had hit the window...'cept the windows were open and no birds...not sure what that was...doesn't smell like natural gas...

:usually a lurker here but popping in:
I'm in NY and didn't feel anything, while my mom (who is about 5 miles away) did! Glad everyone is ok!
I can't imagine what the 7 and 8's feel like!?! I am not aware of aftershocks ... but some of Japan's aftershocks were just as strong as the Va earthquake.
I was scared of what happened here...and when I heard a plane this morning, it was a similar sound and I tensed up...and that was off of one smallish one...
I totally empathized with earthquake victims before... but now the sympathy and remorse - for what I didn't understand before... We had raised money, collected items, gave blood ... and those things are really important... but peace of mind and the sense of safety/security can never be donated or replaced...
