DIY Baby Gifts

My best friend from HS is having a baby and I'm SO excited for her! She's having a little boy in January. I'm trying to think of some great baby gifts I could make her, but most importantly, ones she'll really use/need.

I'm making 2 outfits, a paci clip and a moby wrap. What else is a great must have for a new mommy that is DIYable?

Re: DIY Baby Gifts

  • My SIL's mother has made me some awesome DIY flannel blankets for both of my boys. She always uses fabric that matches my nursery and they are extra big so they are great for swaddling or for a little blanket when they are older.

They are pretty much just two pieces of flannel sewn together but they are so great!

I always thought it would also be great to gift someone a blanket that matches their carseat because I always have a hard time finding one that matches mine.

  • Burp cloths! I wish I'd had more of the long & narrow kind.

You could also do flannel swaddling blankets. I think handmade ones are far superior than the ones you buy in stores, and not just because they're made with love. :)  They're cheap & easy (even for me!) but well appreciated.

  • How about a car seat canopy or a cover like you have made before?

  • I have made 2 car seat canopies (one for warmer weather and one for cold weather), nursing covers, burp cloths, flannel blankets, nursery bedding, letters for the nursery, paci clips...I'll try to think of more.

  • I think you could make a fortune by DIY'ing a miracle wrap. It wouldn't be all that hard. You'd just have to sew in the flaps that keep the arms down. It wouldn't even have to have a foot pocket. Actually not putting a foot pocket in would be better for swings and carseats.

  • If she'll be getting a boppy, you could make extra covers for it. I'm jealous of your friend and all this cool stuff you're making for her and the baby!

  • how about diy hooded towels? you could find some cute terry cloth and trim
  • I've made quilts, burp cloths & boppy covers as gifts.

(when I gave a boppy cover I also bought the pillow)

  • I thought of another one!

I was just telling my mom last night that I'd like to sew a loop on our bath towels so that I could hang it around my neck.  That way it would be easier than tucking it under my chin as I pull a wet child out of the tub, usually getting my shirt wet anyway.  ;)
