Irene is freaking me out.

This area flooded out really badly with Hurrcane Floyd in '99. We have a waterline in the basement here because the house flooded.

When we were buying the place, I checked all the flood maps, recommendations, etc. Everyone was like, that was a freak, once-in-a-lifetime storm. You'd never get water like that again.

Irene is currently projected to take the same path as Floyd. It's freaking me out. Oh please, don't let us flood.

Re: Irene is freaking me out.

  • Flooding is awful and why I will neverever have a house with a basement in it.  Fingers crossed for you guys.

Remind me to never go anywhere near the east coast during the last 2 weeks of August.

  • It seems like Irene has been changing course quite a bit. For a while it looked liek it was going to take the same course as Andrew did in '93. It could still change course or lower in intensity. Try not to worry too much!

I'm still crossing my fingers that it'll turn back towards FL a little bit and give us a hurricane day on Friday :)

  • It was more than just Floyd when it flooded last time - a big storm system from the west hit at the same time and the tides were just right. I just feel like until we weather a hurricane here, I'm always going to wonder and worry about it!
  • Ugh, fingers crossed it fizzles out, hurricanes and flooding are horrible. BTW Panda, Andrew was in '92, I know because I lived in Homestead, otherwise known as ground zero to those of us who lived through it. Almost 20 years later and the town is finally almost rebuilt...

  • I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the storm goes way off to sea. We're supposed to start getting the higher waves by Thursday...and the tiny road that my school is on doesn't deal well with waves in regular rain/thunderstorms. I've had days trying to time driving over one portion with the waves coming in and out. Not excited that this is hitting right as school is starting back up.

  • Goodness... I hope everything is ok... ugh, floods.

    Keep us posted....

We lived in southern Louisiana when Andrew passed through there. Most terrifying experience of my life!

Oops! I confess, I was only 5 when Andrew came through and I lived in NY so what I know of the storm is only what I've heard from MIL and others who lived through it.

  • I'm getting a little concerned myself. I hadn't been paying that much attention, since I live in NY, but I'm seeing now that they're expecting it to hit us. Plus, we're supposed to be going to Long Island this weekend for a wine tour with some friends...maybe not the best idea?

  • I think I've been under a rock for the past few days. I was all "Who is Irene and why is she bothering Kate?" lol...

Anyway, now that I've read the headlines, it looks like it's supposed to hit NC now. They are evacuating the coast and the OBX now.

  • I'm thankful I'm not going to Wilmington until next weekend right now.

  • I am always such a worry wart when it comes to the weather. Hopefully it will change course.
