Anyone else worried about the hurricane?

I'm starting to freak a little.  Long Island is currently slated to be hit by Hurricane Irene, and after the swamp that we had two weeks ago, I'm definitely nervous.  I'm off to ACE hardware now to see about getting drain pipes to lead water away from the house, but I'm nervous!  We haven't seen a hurricane since I was 3....26 years ago.  Anyone have a hurricane "must-have" survival guide?  We have gas cooking, but we know that could get shut off at any time.  Here's what I have thus far:

Flashlights/batteries

Candles

Non-perishable food - bread, peanut butter, etc.

Bags of ice

Non-electric can opener

Um....

Help!!!!  Especially for ideas for non-perishable food.  TIA!!!

Re: Anyone else worried about the hurricane?

  • I'm not overly worried, but we are in an area where even a severe storm doesn't cause too much damage, and we are not in danger of major flooding. I did buy a pack of D batteries for the camping trip we just got home from, so we have enough for the lantern and flashlight, and we always have candles. We keep gallon jugs of water for drinking/animals, anyway, so we are set there, and have plenty of non-perishables.

To add to your list, gather any medications you would need and you can buy dry cereals, dried fruits, canned/packaged apple sauce, peaches, etc.

  • I'm not worried about here in Ohio, but I am worried about my sister who lives in Myrtle Beach, SC.  They think it's going to go north and barely skirt her, but you never know!  She lives alone so I can only imagine how scared I would be.  We told her if she has to evacuate, she can go to my in-laws who live about 2-3 hours inland.

    • crackers
    • bread
    • I found horizon brand milk that doesn't need to be refrigerated (but I'm sure tastes better if it was)

  • Thanks for the list!  DH and I came up with a list together, and I went to the grocery store and I'm glad I did before it got nutty.  If we are going to get hit, I don't want to be anywhere near the stores on Friday, with the exception of ACE because the part I need comes in Friday morning.  We also stocked up on plastic cutlery.
