What are you reading?

What are you reading (or what have you read lately) and would you recommend it? I like to do these posts occasionally to see what's good out there.

Re: What are you reading?

  • I just started reading The Pillars of the Earth. I'm really enjoying it so far and can barely put it down.

I recently read The Warmth of Other Suns which is about The Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson. I found the whole book very thought provoking and learned a lot. I also read Anna Karenina finally. I'm glad I finished it, but I'm not sure it was worth the read for me.

Overall, it's been a heavy reading summer.  Last week I read The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott. It was okay, but hard for me to really enjoy since it's such a different type of book then what I've been reading lately.

This book puzzles me. I read the first 100 pages or so and thought it was slow and dry as heck and put it down. But people seem to rave and rave about it (and I loved one of his other way less known books). I don't know why I'm having that reaction. Does it get better?

Oh, and I listened to an abridged version of Anna Karenina on tape. Fine way to do it! Good for you for getting through the whole thing!

  • I think I mentioned this when I was reading it but I thought City of Oranges: An Intimate History of Arabs and Jews in Jaffa was very interesting. I'm rereading Pat of Silver Bush (an L.M. Motgomery book) until I get the first of the Murdoch Mysteries series for my birthday next month. They're the books the TV series is based on.

I really love historical fiction from almost any time period, so I think that's why it has sucked me in. I think it's slowed down a bit, but it's hooked me enough that I'm trying to read it whenever I can.

What was his other book you loved?

  • Jackdaws, about female spies in WWII. Excellent.

  • I am currently reading The Help.  I'm only halfway through and have to wrench myself away to go to bed at night.  Before that, I read a biography of Abraham Lincoln (free download for the kindle) and really enjoyed that too.  Before that, was Candle in the Darkness (Refiner's Fire, Book 1) by Lynn Austin which I enjoyed as well.

Some of his other books are on my reading list.  I really liked pillars (but I enjoy historical fiction) I really like having the kindle for books like this because it's so long and with the kindle, I don't have to lug it around!  I also liked World Without End.
  • I just finished "Room," which I really liked. I now have "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" on my bedside table but haven't started it yet.
  • I just finished The Help and loved it! I'm now reading The Hunger Games (my BIL told me about it and I have to admit...it is definitely a page-turner but its pure entertainment only).
  • I just bought Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, but haven't started it yet.

I started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but couldn't get into it. I need to start over and try again.

For some reason, I'm not that motivated to pick it up either. Might not be in the right mood for it right now... I may pick up something else for a while.

I read that.  It was a pretty interesting read.

  • I just read The Help and really enjoyed it. I have no idea why I waited so long to pick it up!

I'm starting on To Kill A Mockingbird, I never had to read it in school and my SIL told me that I had to so here I am :)

I've heard a lot of people say this. I've also heard them say you can skip the first 100 pages. Indifferent

Seriously? What's the point then?? And yet so many people rave about this book...

I generally have a "read 50 pages and if I hate it, put it down" rule so we'll see how this works out. I refuse to waste time reading something that isn't interesting to me.

I added it too. Sounds really interesting. Maybe THAT'S what I should read next...

I know! I don't get it either. Seems like a lot of books start slow like that. Heck, even the Twilight books that sold millions start off incredibly slow. Makes me wonder if there's a dearth of editors or something. It's not good writing if people are bored!

As you can imagine, the book publishing world is very political. That Jackdaws book sounds interesting. I might have to track that one down, too.
  • I'm reading A Dance With Dragons, book 5 of the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin. My husband sucked me into this series, and I have to admit that I love it.

OK, the gals on the book board are raving about this series. Is it new? Am I going to have to wait forever at the library to get them? Or did they come out a while ago? (I hate having to wait months or years for books in a series to be released.)

I believe the first book, A Game of Thrones, came out in the 80's. The fifth book just recently came out. So yeah, there's a long wait between books. The TV show on HBO has helped with the withdrawal though. I have no idea if there will be a wait at the library, but they are EVERYWHERE in the bookstore.

No, I'm not. Should I be? I'm open to joining but I have no idea what it is really.

I just sent you an invite via FB. It's a social networking site where you can list books you want to read, ones you have read, keep track of what you are reading, and see your friends' reviews and such. A good time waster. Wink

Not just a time waster! It helps me keep track of books I want to read and what other people who share my taste are reading. So when I'm wondering "What should I read next?" I go there and have a place to start.

So yeah, join, so we can stalk your reading habits and you can stalk ours ;)

  • I'm currently reading Language Intervention Strategies in Aphasia and Related Neurogenic Communication Disorders, it's over 1000 pages and a real page turner. Don't be jealous...
