I'm stepping up in the world! TK > TN

Hi ladies!  I've been hanging out on Military Brides on The Knot for awhile now, but I figured since I'm sick of all the wedding junk (i.e. what uniform should he wear, can he wear the white summer dress pants in November cuz they look pretty, what colors coordinate with the uniforms, getting married in secret and then expecting a big pretty princess 'wedding day'... etc.) that I might be a little better suited over here!

A little about us:  I'm 25, work for a talent acquisition resourcing company in Miami Beach, speak Spanish & a teensy bit of Chinese, just joined Crossfit and have been running for about a year now - training for my second half marathon this February!  My FI is a 28 year old law student who just got promoted to 1st Lt in the USMC - he's doing the JAG path, so he'll be graduating next May and then entering TBS sometime next fall/spring after he takes the bar exam.  He's a Crossfit addict, obsessed with fitness and nutrition and will offer his opinion to any poor unsuspecting soul.  We both love board games, wine tasting, microbrew beer, and traveling.

We met in DC on Sept 7, 2008, he went to OCS in May 2009 and moved to Miami in August 2009 to start law school.  I followed in December 2009 and we rent a cute little house with a big mango tree in the backyard with a hammock in it, and we get to leave (hurray! I hate this city) next July after he takes the bar.  We're getting married September 1, 2012 in Connecticut near our families (his in NY, mine in RI).

Hmm... I think that's about it.  Anything I missed? Big Smile  Looking forward to getting to know you all!

  • Welcome to MN. I'm about to Google this anyway, but what is Crossfit exactly?

  • Welcome! I never understood why so many brides wanted to match their wedding colors to military uniforms...

  • Hey, welcome to the board. DH is AD Army currently on the other side of the world. Congrats on your upcoming wedding.

Crossfit uses the technique of working as a hard as possible with very few breaks so that your overall workout time is like 30-45 min but you burn a ton of calories. Crossfit is also synonymous with "living hell".

Oh, okay, gotcha. I went to their FAQ, and around the middle of the first paragraph my head started spinning. I was just curious because DH is looking into different fitness programs. Would you say that it works okay for amateurs or should beginners probably start somewhere else?

I think "living hell" is a good description!  I'm a total amateur with no muscle tone whatsoever, so if your DH is interested, it's a great way to get fit!  It's usually expensive to join, but man oh man, what a workout!  I think the key is whether or not he's okay with being bad at something - a lot of guys start off slow, but then they think they're doing good and get cocky and do too much weight too fast and end up getting hurt.  So if he's okay taking it slow and being really bad at something for awhile, he'll never be in better shape.  Here they are telling me to do these moves with 110 pound weights, and I'm asking, "Can I just use the bar?!"  And I still hurt all over!

No kidding, imho the bar is heavy on it's own!

  • Welcome! I'm A., and we live in South Carolina. My husband's in the AF, and I may ask for some Crossfit recs once I pop this kid out. Mama's gotta get her body back! :)

I, like Fancy, am jealous of your mango tree. I dated a guy from East Africa in college and he said one of his favorite memories was picking a mango right off the tree. It always sounded so much yummier than the ones I picked up at the grocery store.

  • Welcome! Another crossfit lover here! My H was doing the whole lawyer thing before he joined AD Army but now he's really happy so that's all that matters. If only his job could get us to Miami....

  • Hey Cal!
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Hello! I'm J, DH is AD AF, and crossfit sounds like our arch nemesis. We are a couch potato family...lol. We have one LO who is not yet mobile, so he too is a couch (or rather floor) potato for the time being, and a new kitty who is turning out to be the most active member of the family.

Maybe one of these days reading all these posts from all you MNers who live healthy and keep in shape will give me the motivation I need to set a better example for the squirt....

  • Thanks for the welcome, ladies!  I myself am a natural couch potato, but my FI is ridiculously into fitness, so I am getting unwillingly dragged into a healthier lifestyle.  But I do like how I feel, and I'm looking forward to a better body, so there's that!

I like the mango tree, and the mangos are tasty.  I make a pretty fantastic mango margarita, if I do say so myself.  However, it's about the only thing I like about living in Miami.  That, and we can do weekend cruises for super cheap without having to fly anywhere.  But yeah, Miami kinda is heII and I cannot want to leave in a year.  People are mean, self-involved, manipulative, horrible drivers, will screw you over ten ways to Sunday if it makes them a buck.  I want OUT!  T-minus 11 months and counting!
