Really!? Not making this "stuff" up!

So, our maid/nanny started on Monday. She is great and actually was our maid at my in-laws house when we first arrived in Colombia 4 years ago. She is reliable and dependable which is the important thing when finding a helper like this in Colombia. This type of worker here normally comes from the lower-class and they are really strong in their beliefs of "old wives tales." Well, today, day 4 on the job, she has informed us that she can't pick-up (lift) Valencia today because she is having her period. DH just told me, she told him as soon as she got here. WTF?! How are you going to be  nanny if for several days a month you can't lift a newborn? DH doesn't want to say anything about it now cause it really isn't a big deal right now since I am here and she is mostly cooking and cleaning now anyhow but what about in 4 months when I go back to work? UGH! Any ideas on how I can deal with this one? I know I need to respect her belief but got to teach her otherwise.

  • What is it with other cultures and their period hang-ups?! German girls can get out of sports class when Aunt Flo shows....light exercise generally helps cramps, so I don?t get the whole "I?m on my period and can?t do anything, thing.".

  • I'd tell her that since you're post-partum bleeding hasn't stopped, and is considerably worse than her period, she should suck it up and pick up the child she's being paid to watch!

Seriously though, I have no idea how I would handle it.  Maybe ask your ILs?  I'm sure they're used to dealing with the sensitive issues like these with her.

Also, is it because she thinks she's "unclean" right now or because it's too much effort while she's menstruating?

  • OMG! And now she is saying that I can't eat leftovers for lunch since I am breastfeeding. Ugh! I started to laugh at that one and DH told me not to laugh. This is gonna be fun, I can already tell. Where do people come up with this stuff!

  • So weird!  Reminds me of a friend in HS whose Italian mother would make her own pasta sauce with the tomatoes that she would hand pick, etc, and my friend was never allowed to help her pick the tomatoes during her period because it was bad luck!   So random.
  • I'm totally side eyeing this lady.

I'm down with respecting cultural differences, but if you are going to work in a domestic situation I would suspect you may want to be quite upfront about those things first so you and your employer can find a compromise.

I'd talk to the IL about it and then ask her what her plans are for 4 months from now when you are working.
